Team captain Anna Brylin paced the Demon Deacons during Friday morning.

CARY, N.C. – Wake Forest women's tennis saw its run in the 2023 Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Championships come to an end on Friday morning (April 21), as the No. 9-seeded Demon Deacons fell to No. 1-seeded North Carolina (28-0) in the quarterfinal round. The Tar Heels advanced on a victorious 4-0 decision.

The Deacs moved to 17-13 overall this spring. The quarterfinal appearance was a seventh-straight one by the team, dating back to 2015-16, when Wake Forest advanced to the such round of the conference tournament for the first time since 2010.

Anna Brylin mainly led the way for her squad, impressively notching a 6-2 first-set victory in second singles before her match went unfinished.

How it Happened

  • Both sides jumped right into doubles to start the morning, as No. 18 Anna Brylin/Brooke Killingsworth and Nevena Carton/Whitley Pate split through their opening pair of games.
    • The former tied the board at 2-2 soon afterward.
  • North Carolina took first doubles, 6-2.
    • Moments later, the Tar Heels secured the first point one court over.
      • Carton/Pate went unfinished in third doubles, trailing 5-2 at the time.
  • In singles, Brylin and Killingsworth each tied their first at 2-2 early on.
  • Carton set an early tone, winning three of her first four solo games in the opening set.
  • Brylin was the lone Deac to win her first set, letting up only two games against No. 6 Reese Brantmeier.
  • North Carolina wrapped fifth singles in a straight-sets victory.
    • The Tar Heels then upped their lead in the match to 3-0 after winning first singles in set sweeps.
  • Pate evened her second frame at 2-2 after dropping the first.
  • A win by North Carolina on court three put an end to the contest.
  • Wake Forest fell, 4-0.

From the Head Honcho

"Tough match today," said head coach Jeff Wyshner. "We did some good things. I'm impressed by our players' ability to keep doing some little things better. It was good to make it to the third round again this year with a gutty win on Thursday. We'll get home, do some studying since school is ending in the next two weeks, and get ready for NCAA's."
