Melios Efstathiou, Jurabek Karimov and Juan Lopez de Azcona will be recognized prior to Sunday’s contest as part of Senior Day.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – After dropping consecutive road matches last weekend, the 19th-ranked Wake Forest men's tennis team will return home to host defending national champion No. 8 Virginia (Friday, April 7) and No. 73 Virginia Tech (Sunday, April 9) this weekend at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex.
 
Prior to last weekend's pair of narrow losses, the Demon Deacons (21-8, 5-3 ACC) were on a six-match winning streak where they were out-scoring their opponents 28-4.
 
Sunday's match against the 73rd-ranked Hokies will serve as Senior Day as Melios Eftstahiou, Jurabek Karimov and Juan Lopez de Azcona will be recognized for their contributions to the Wake Forest men's tennis program.
 
This week, Efstathiou moved up to fifth in the ITA Singles Rankings after consecutive top-50 dual singles victories against Duke and North Carolina. The Limassol, Cyprus native owns a 16-3 dual singles record this season and has won eight of his last nine matches.
 
With four matches remaining, the Demon Deacons are in position to potentially host a regional in the NCAA Tournament as they are ranked 19th nationally. Currently, the Deacs are ranked sixth in the ACC but sit only one match out of fourth. Of note, the top four seeds in the league receive a double-bye in the ACC Tournament.

Last Time Out
Wake Forest fell to No. 13 North Carolina, 4-3, Sunday at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill, N.C.
 
Sunday's loss marked only the third time since 2015 that the Demon Deacons had fallen to the Tar Heels and the first time since 2021. Despite the defeat, Wake Forest owns a 7-2 record against North Carolina in the last nine meetings between the two sides.
 
Doubles play was tightly contested early, before the Tar Heels went on to notch the point behind victories in the first and third slots. North Carolina's momentum from doubles carried over into singles action as it won the opening set on 4/6 courts. The Demon Deacons stormed back in singles play, earning victories in first, fifth and sixth singles, before ultimately falling 4-3.
 
Senior Melios Efstathiou continued his stellar 2023 campaign Sunday as the Limassol, Cyprus native notched his second-consecutive top-50 victory with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) win in first singles.
 
The Matchup - No. 8 Virginia
Defending ACC and NCAA Champion Virginia enters Friday's contest with a 17-4 overall record, including a perfect 8-0 mark in ACC play. The Cavaliers are 5-0 on the road and have allowed only five points in a total of eight league matches. Virginia is coming off a 5-2 victory over then 13th-ranked Harvard.

The Demon Deacons are 4-2 against Virginia in the last six meetings between the two sides. Friday will mark the 75th all-time meeting between the Demon Deacons and the Cavaliers as Wake Forest owns a 24-50 record against Virginia.
 
The Matchup - No. 73 Virginia Tech
Virginia Tech (8-12, 2-6 ACC) enters the weekend having dropped seven of its last eight matches. The Hokies lone ranked win this season came in a 4-3 victory over No. 43 Miami. Virginia Tech is led by Ryan Fishback who owns an 11-9 dual singles record.
