Wake Forest earned its ninth-consecutive win over the Hokies, dating back to 2015.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Behind a 6-0 record in singles action, the 19th-ranked Wake Forest men's tennis team earned a 7-0 sweep over ACC foe No. 73 Virginia Tech Sunday at the Wake Forest Tennis Center.
 
With Sunday's decision, the Demon Deacons (22-9, 6-4 ACC) earned their ninth win against a ranked opponent this season and their ninth-consecutive victory over the Hokies, dating back to 2015.
 
Sunday's win also improved the Deacs to a stellar 19-4 at home this season, marking the ninth-straight season the Demon Deacons have finished with a home winning percentage over 80 percent.
 
Wake Forest took the doubles point against Virginia Tech (8-14, 2-8 ACC) behind victories in second and third doubles as No. 87 Matthew Thomson/Filippo Moroni defeated Alberto Orso/Scott Sculley (6-2) and Juan Lopez de Azcona/Melios Efstathiou knocked off Matt Harper/Frank Thompson (6-4).
 
Of note, the senior doubles pairing of Efstathiou/Lopez de Azcona clinched the doubles point for Wake Forest in their final home match.
 
The Demon Deacons' momentum from doubles play carried over into singles as the Deacs went a perfect 6-0 in singles play to secure the match victory. Of note, with Sunday's win in first singles, No. 5 Efstathiou improved to 17-4 this season.
 
How It Happened
  • No. 87 Matthew Thomson/Filippo Moroni came out strong in second doubles, jumping out to a 3-0 lead through three games.
  • Through seven games, Wake Forest led in second and third doubles.
  • No. 87 Thomson/Moroni earned the first doubles win of the contest with a 6-2 victory over Alberto Orso/Scott Sculley in second doubles.
  • The Deacs clinched the doubles point as Lopez de Azcona/Efstathiou earned a 6-4 decision in third doubles.
  • Wake Forest took a 1-0 lead into singles play.
  • The Demon Deacons came out strong in singles action as Moroni and Bozo Barun both earned opening set victories in second and fourth singles, respectively.
    • Wake Forest eventually won the first set on all six courts to take control of the match.
      • 1) No. 5 Efstathiou won 6-3.
      • 2) Moroni won 6-1.
      • 3) Thomson won 6-4.
      • 4) Barun won 6-1.
      • 5) Tacchi won 7-6 (7-5).
      • 6) Lopez de Azcona won 7-5.
  • Thomson gave the Deacs a 2-0 lead as he defeated Sculley 6-4, 6-1 in third singles.
  • Minutes later, No. 5 Efstathiou knocked off Ryan Fishback 6-3, 6-2 to extend the Demon Deacons' lead to 3-0.
    • Efstathiou improved to 17-4 this season in dual singles action.
  • Barun clinched the victory for Wake Forest as he beat Hugo Maia 6-1, 7-6 (7-1) in fourth singles.
    • The two sides chose to play out the remainder of the contest despite the clinch.
  • Moroni then gave the Deacs a 5-0 lead with a 6-1, 7-6 (7-1) win in second singles.
  • Lopez de Azcona defeated Orso 7-6 (7-5), 7-5, before Tacchi defeated Alex Ix 7-5, 2-6, 1-0 (10-7) to close singles action.
  • Wake Forest defeated Virginia Tech, 7-0, improving to 19-4 at home this season.
