Demon Deacons Primed for ACC Outdoor Track & Field Championships

The Deacs will look to continue their stellar outdoor season.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – After a two-week hiatus, the Wake Forest men's and women's track and field teams will return to action Thursday to compete in the 2023 ACC Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Paul Derr Track & Field Facility in Raleigh, N.C.
Competition is slated to begin at 11 a.m. on Thursday with the men's javelin.
2023 ACC Championships
Admission to the 2023 ACC Outdoor Track and Field championships is free.
Expanded coverage of the event will be streamed live each day via ACC Network Extra as follows: Thursday from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m., Friday from 11 a.m. through 9 p.m., and Saturday from 2 p.m. until the championship's conclusion at approximately 9 p.m. Steve Schlanger will be on the call, with Norm Ogilvie returning on color commentary and Hailey Hunter as sideline reporter.
Full Event Schedule
This season, the Demon Deacons claimed four program records, all at the home meet on April 21. Graduate student Leia Braunagel tossed 56.67m in the discus, freshman Sophie Perez Gonzalez threw 59.85m in the hammer, sophomore Ashlyn Giles launched 16.15m in the shot put and graduate student Zach Facioni clocked 13:27.71 in the 5,000m.

Leia Braunagel continued her dominant 2023 with her fourth-consecutive first-place finish and fifth on the season as the graduate student recorded 55.01m in the women's discus. Additionally, Ashlyn Giles threw 44.94m and also finished in the top 10.
In the women's hammer, Katrina Andreassen notched the second Demon Deacon top finish of the day as she launched a 55.66m.
On the men's side, Andrew White (57.23m) led the way in the discus as he notched his fifth podium of the outdoor season. Connor Mathis (50.59m) and Mason Ellis (48.95m) finished in sixth and ninth, respectively.
The Deacs also landed three inside the top 10 of the men's hammer. Jack Pihlkar finished on the podium for the second-consecutive week as his 61.27m earned him a silver medal. Jake Goldberg (57.96m) and Mason Ellis (50.02m) grabbed fourth and ninth, respectively.
In the running events, Elizabeth Whaley (4:24.06) and Amy Harding-Delooze (4:24.30) finished in second and third, respectively, and headlined six Demon Deacons in the top 10 of the women's 1500m invite. Emily Akin (4:29.54), Elise Wright (4:31.15), Madeline Rehm (4:33.08) and Mackenzie Hart (4:33.53) finished, in order, from fifth to eighth.
Leigh Walters closed out day one with a third place finish for the Deacs, as she clocked 17:11.04 in the women's 5000m.
From Saturday
The women's shot put squad impressed yet again, as Ashlyn Giles (15.27m) and Amanda Schaare (15.21m) grabbed first and second, respectively. This marked the second-consecutive week both members of the duo finished on the podium. Additionally, Casey Sullivan (13.80m) finished in sixth.
Robbie Grace made it four first-place finishes for the Demon Deacons on the weekend after she jumped 5.70m in the long jump, marking the second-straight week Grace finished on the podium.
In the first event of the day, Emma Soderstrom cleared 1.71m and grabbed silver in the women's high jump. Anna Bush also notched a podium-finish, as the graduate student cleared 1.66m.

The NCAA East Preliminary Track & Field Championships will take place in two weeks (May 24-27) in Jacksonville, Fla.
