Two-time ACC Pitcher of the Year Rhett Lowder became the first Wake Forest baseball player in program history to be named ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Additionally, Wake Forest’s 12 All-ACC Academic Team honorees set a new program record.
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Two-time ACC Pitcher of the Year Rhett Lowder became the first Wake Forest baseball player in program history to be named ACC Baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year, as announced by the league office on Wednesday morning. Additionally, Wake Forest placed 12 on the 2023 All-ACC Academic Team, which is a new program record.
Lowder, an economics major, holds a 3.6 career grade point average and became just the third Demon Deacon in program history, and the first since 1997, to receive first team academic all-america honors on June 7.
Additionally, Lowder was joined by Adam Cecere and Justin Johnson on the CSC Academic All-District team on May 18.
Athletically, Lowder posted an historical season on the diamond. The Albemarle, N.C. native posted program records in wins (15) and strikeouts (143) while tossing the fourth-most innings (120.1) by a Demon Deacon ever.
Lowder's 15 victories this season led the nation while the righthander also ranked fourth nationally in ERA (1.87) and strikeouts (143) and eighth in WHIP (.95).
After three seasons in the Old Gold and Black, Lowder ranks second in program history in strikeouts (326), third in wins (30), fifth in strikeouts-per-nine (10.22) and sixth in innings pitched (287.1).
After becoming the first Demon Deacon ever to receive the award last season, Lowder became just the second pitcher in conference history to garner back-to-back ACC Pitcher of the Year honors (Danny Hultzen, 2010-11) this season.
Lowder finished the regular season as the conference's leader in ERA (1.73), wins (12), innings pitched (88.2) and strikeouts (108). In ACC play, Lowder also leads the conference in those same categories.
Lowder blanked a conference opponent four times during the 2023 season (Miami, Louisville, BC and Florida State). The Albemarle, N.C. native has been awarded ACC Pitcher of the Week three times after such performances.
Dating back to last season, Lowder allowed three earned runs or less in 33 of his last 35 starts and has gone at least six innings in 32 starts.
Cecere (Communication), Lucas Costello (Communication), Marek Houston (Undeclared), Johnson (Masters in Analytics), Bennett Lee (Psychology), Lowder (Economics), Reed Mascolo (Economics), Michael Massey (Economics), Camden Minacci (Psychology), Cole Roland (Masters in Management), Sean Sullivan (Undeclared), Chase Walter (Masters in Management) garnered this prestigious honor thanks to a combination of academic and athletic achievements during the 2023 campaign.
This marks the second Academic All-ACC accolade for Cecere, Lowder and Minacci, while the rest of Wake Forest's honorees received the first Academic All-ACC honor of their careers.
Wake Forest's 12 honorees set a new program record. Additionally, the baseball program has now placed at least four honorees on the conference's academic squad eight times in the last 11 years.
Requirements for selection to the All-ACC Baseball Academic Team are a 3.0-grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one's academic career. In addition, position players must compete in at least 50 percent of their team's contests and pitchers in 20 percent.
