Deacs vs. Black Knights
  • Wake Forest is looking to start 2-0 for the third-consecutive season after defeating App State, 1-0, Thursday evening.
    • The Demon Deacons outshot the Mountaineers 21-4.
      • Of note, the Deacs held App State shotless in the first half.
  • Head coach Tony da Luz is in his 27th season at the helm of the Deacs and is coming off of a successful 2022 campaign which saw Wake Forest selected to the NCAA Tournament for the second-consecutive season after posting a 9-7-3 record.
  • Despite outshooting the opponent, 15-5 (12-2 in the second half), Army is coming off of a 2-0 road loss to UNC Greensboro in its season opener.
    • Forward Jasmine Talley led the team off the bench with four shots in 57 minutes played.
  • Last season, the Knights won the Patriot League regular-season title with 20 points (6-1-2 record) and posted an overall record of 9-4-7, with only one of its nine wins coming on the road.
    • Army took care of Lehigh, 2-0, in the conference semifinals before falling on penalty kicks to two-seeded Bucknell in the championship match.
Chao's Homecoming
Army head coach Tracy Chao played for Wake Forest from 1999-2002, as the Deacs accumulated a 49-31-6 record during her career. Chao helped lead the Demon Deacons to four NCAA Tournament appearances, including a trip to the Sweet 16 in 1999.

During the 2000 campaign, Chao was named Wake Forest's Most Valuable Player as she went 9-8-2 with three shutouts, a 1.41 goals-against average and a .746 save percentage in goal after transitioning from defender.

After her playing career, Chao continued to serve Wake Forest, working for the Demon Deacons' women's basketball program as the director of basketball operations.

Last Time Out (Against App State)
Behind a stingy defensive effort, Wake Forest earned a 1-0 victory over App State Thursday evening to open the 2023 season.

With the win, the Demon Deacons (1-0-0) improved to 16-1-2 in non-conference action over the past three seasons. Additionally, the Deacs improved to 76-8-3 all-time against non-conference in-state opponents.

Senior forward Liv Stowell scored Wake Forest's inaugural goal of the 2023 campaign in the 25th minute when she received a pass from junior midfielder Nikayla Small and fired a shot to the far post that found the back of the net.

Of note, the goal marked Stowell's seventh-career goal and her first since last season's 2-0 victory over Miami (Oct. 9, 2022).

Anchored by junior center back Laurel Ansbrow, the Wake Forest defense suffocated the Mountaineers' offense, allowing only four shots for the contest. Goalkeeper Maddy Howard had an excellent showing in goal for the Deacs, notching a save on each of App State's four attempts.

Army Breakdown
  • The Knights' top offensive returner from last season, junior Kaelen Bradley, appeared in and started all 20 games.
    • Bradley finished second on the team in points (10) and assists (4), while bagging three goals.
      • She notched two last-minute winners in games against Holy Cross (9/21/22) and Boston University (10/26/22).
  • In goal, Sage Strohman finished 2022 with the second-lowest goals-against average (.801) and second-most shutouts (8) in the Patriot League.
    • Her 71 saves and .826 save percentage both ranked third in the conference.
