The reigning ACC Freshman of the Year receives a conference nod following a standout week one.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Fresh off a successful opening weekend of going 3-0 in its 2023 hosted invitational, Wake Forest volleyball picked up strong recognition on Monday afternoon (Aug. 28) when sophomore libero Emma Farrell was named Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Defensive Player of the Week.
With the conference's 'Defensive Player of the Week' being a newly added accolade this fall, Farrell becomes the first-ever individual to be honored.
Farrell has now attained three ACC weekly awards throughout her career, being named ACC Freshman of the Week twice during the 2022 campaign (Sept. 19 & Nov. 15).
"Emma Farrell!" head coach Randi Smart exclaimed in delight. "Controlled, poised, athletic, smooth, confident and fast. She makes everyone and everything better!"
Farrell had her usual floor quickness and defensive prowess on full display during the Demon Deacons' three days of competition, leading the team in digs in each contest. She totaled 54 digs overall, averaging 5.4 per set. That mark currently stands best among all ACC individuals through week one. Farrell finished as the conference's digs-per-set leader with a 4.41 average in 2022, being the only true freshman to place in the ACC's top-10 list within the statistical category.
In the event finale against Grand Canyon, with both teams holding 2-0 records entering the contest, Farrell finished with 23 digs and seven assists en route to helping Wake Forest earn the four-set victory. The Norcross, Georgia, native has now reached 12 career occasions where she's contributed over 20 digs.
Farrell's other performances throughout the weekend involved her recording 18 digs and four assists against Toledo in the season opener, along with 13 digs versus Northeastern on Saturday (Aug. 26).
Wake Forest gears up for an incoming three-week road stretch, first visiting Central Florida for the 2023 UCF Challenge (Sept. 1-3). Matchups against Alabama State, the host Knights, and Florida International are on deck for the Deacs.
