No. 10 Wake Forest Records Clean Sheet Victory Over Boston College; Coach Muuss Reaches 50 ACC Wins

9/29/2023 5:13:00 PM | Men's Soccer

The Demon Deacons have now recorded back-to-back clean sheets in ACC play.

NEWTON, MASS. -- The No. 10 ranked Wake Forest men's soccer team (7-1-3, 2-1-1 ACC) recorded a second-straight clean sheet in ACC action on Friday afternoon, recording a 1-0 victory over Boston College (2-4-3, 0-3-1 ACC) at the Newton Soccer Complex.

Wake Forest took a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute, as Cooper Flax one-timed a low cross into the box from Jahlane Forbes for his first goal of the season. The goal would prove to be the difference, as the Eagles recorded just one shot on goal that was saved by Trace Alphin

The Demon Deacons finished the afternoon with advantages in shots (13-9), shots on goal (6-1) and corner kicks (5-4).

Friday afternoon's victory marked the 50th ACC regular season victory for head coach Bobby Muuss, reaching the mark in his ninth season at the helm. Under Muuss' leadership along with associate head coaches Steve Armas and Dane Brenner and assistant coach Ade Taiwo, the Deacs are 50-12-9 (76.7 winning percentage) in ACC regular season action since 2015.

From 2015-18, the Deacons won four-straight ACC Atlantic Division titles and this year's senior class has registered 19 conference regular season victories since 2020.

Additionally, with Friday's win over Boston College this senior class has earned 47 total victories over the last four seasons which ranks third nationally behind only Washington (49) and Clemson (48).

The Demon Deacons will continue ACC play next Friday, facing NC State at Dail Soccer Field.

Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the match will air on ACC Network Extra.

  • Wake Forest would take a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute, as Cooper Flax was on the receiving end of a Jahlane Forbes cross for the first goal of his sophomore campaign.
    • Forbes – who registered his 15th career assist – made a run down the left wing after a set-up from Sidney Paris that started in the back with Trace Alphin and Prince Amponsah
    • The senior is now tied for 28th in program history in career assists, joining John Duguid (1989-92),  Raimo DeVries (1989-92), Evan Brown (2005-08), Ricky Gilkes (1983-86), Jacori Hayes (2013-16) and Bruno Lapa (2016-19).

  • Colin Thomas tallied Wake Forest's fifth shot of the first half in the 29th minute, but it was saved.
  • Wake Forest finished the first half with an 8-2 advantage in shots and the only three shots on goal in the opening frame.
  • In the 48th minute, Leo Guarino blocked a shot off of a Eagles corner kick.
  • Guarino shortly after collected back-to-back shots off a through ball into the box, but both attempts were saved.
  • Jeffrey White rocketed a 62nd-minute shot at the top of the 18 that skied over the crossbar.
  • Trace Alphin would be called into action in the 68th minute, diving to his right to save a ground-level attempt from the Eagles.
    • It would be Boston College's only shot on goal.
  • Mitchell nearly made Boston College pay for a 69th-minute miscue, but his one-on-one attempt went left of the frame.
  • The Montclair, N.J., native turned a 77th-minute shot that was also saved.

From Coach Muuss
"I'm proud of the guys today. We had a pretty dominant first half and missed an early chance in the second to give us a little bit of comfort, but Boston College pushed us to the very end. I'm really proud of the way the boys competed on the road again on short rest in an early kickoff and in pouring rain for 90 minutes."

Up Next
The Demon Deacons will have a week off before returning to the pitch next Friday, facing NC State to cap off a three-match roadswing.

Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the match will be streamed on ACC Network Extra.
