Wake Forest Baseball Announces Fall Ball Matchups

The Demon Deacons will take on Elon at home and Vanderbilt on the road this October with eight scrimmages scheduled between the two matchups.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Following program records in regular season wins, ACC wins, ACC series wins, postseason wins and overall wins a season ago, the Wake Forest baseball team is set to turn the page to the 2024 season with a pair of fall contests and eight intrasquad matchups.
The Deacs make their return this fall on Sunday, Oct. 22 welcoming in-state foe Elon to David F. Couch Ballpark. The Phoenix compiled a 33-22 record in 2023, seeing their season come to a close in the semifinals of the CAA Tournament.
Wake Forest then makes the trek to Nashville to face perennial SEC power Vanderbilt on Saturday, Oct. 28. The Dores put together a 42-20 campaign to earn the No. 6 overall seed in the NCAA Division I Tournament, before falling to Xavier in the Regional semifinal.
The Deacs will also hold scrimmages at The Couch during their fall practice session on the following dates:
Saturday, Sept. 30 - First pitch 5:45 p.m.
Sunday, Oct. 1 - First pitch 1:45 p.m.
Saturday, Oct. 7 - First pitch 3:45 p.m.
Sunday, Oct. 8 - First pitch 1:45 p.m.
Saturday, Oct. 14 - First pitch 3:45 p.m.
Sunday, Oct. 15 - First pitch 1:45 p.m.
Friday, Oct. 20 - First pitch 4:15 p.m.
Thursday, Oct. 26 - First pitch 6:45 p.m.
Going into the 2024 season, the Deacs are led by returning All-Americans Josh Hartle and Nick Kurtz.
Hartle was named a First Team All-American by Baseball America and NCBWA, Second Team All-American by ABCA and Collegiate Baseball following the 2023 season. He garnered First Team All-ACC honors en route to being named a Golden Spikes Award Semifinalist.
The King, N.C. product made 17 starts and one appearance out of the pen, posting the fourth-lowest ERA in the ACC (2.81), which ranked 30th in the nation across 102.1 innings pitched. The rising junior accumulated an 11-2 record during his sophomore campaign, good for third in the conference and eighth in the nation in total victories while striking out the second-most batters in program history (140) which ranked fifth in the nation.
Named a Preseason All-American by D1Baseball, Perfect Game and Baseball America, Kurtz rose to the occasion being named a First Team All-American by ABCA, Second Team All-American from Baseball America and NCBWA and Third Team All-American by Collegiate Baseball. The Lancaster, Pa. native was also named First Team All-ACC and a Semifinalist for the Golden Spikes Award.
Kurtz started 56 games for the Demon Deacons finishing second in the ACC in home runs (24), walks (63), runs scored (76) and slugging percentage (.784). He also drove in the fifth-most RBIs (69) and collected the eighth-most total bases in the conference (149) while finishing top-10 nationally in walks (sixth), on-base percentage (seventh) and slugging percentage (ninth).
With a program record 10 selections in the 2023 MLB Draft, the Deacs reloaded this offseason, being named one of Baseball America's transfer portal winners. Five additions were named to D1 Baseball's Top 130 Impact Transfers list with Chase Burns (No. 2), Seaver King (No. 4), Tate Ballestero (No. 59), David Falco (No. 82) and Adam Tellier (No. 88) all receiving recognition. King was also named the winner of the 2023 Summer Breakout Prospect Award by D1 Baseball.
On the bump, the Deacs return 222.2 innings pitched, led by Hartle's 102.1 IP and Michael Massey's 41.2 IP during the 2023 campaign.
At the plate, Wake Forest brings back 563 at bats, steered by Kurtz's 190 and 34 extra-base hits.
