Five Demon Deacons sit in the top 15 going into the final round
GREENVILLE, S.C.- After a solid end to Saturday at the Furman Intercollegiate with the help of being five strokes better in the second round, the Wake Forest men's golf team is in position to potentially claim their second title of the 2024-25 season in the final round, as they are just four strokes outside of first place.
Through 36 holes, the Deacs end day one of the Furman Intercollegiate in third place with a team score of 559 (-9).
Senior Scotty Kennon ended the first day as the top finisher for the Demon Deacon, posting two under par rounds of 68 (-2) and is just one stroke away from the individual lead.
After strong second round showings, individuals Collin Adams and Jorge Hao both sit inside the top 10, both carding two under par rounds on the day.
On his second hole of the day, Adams carded an eagle on the par-5 575-yard 2nd hole. Adams fired a second round of 68 (-3), and goes into the final round tied for sixth place.
Hao, through 36 holes, sits at three under-par and just four strokes off the individual lead and is tied for eighth.
In round two, senior Meisel recorded three consecutive birdies on the second, third and fourth holes to finish the day one under and tied for eleventh.
After shooting three over-par in his first round, sophomore Kyle Haas fought back in round two carding a low four-under 67 in his second. Haas recorded the lowest round of the day for the Deacs.
Haas climbed 31 spots up the leaderboard and goes into round three holding a share of 11th at one-under.
Sophomore Tom Haberer is also inside the top 15 after the first day of play. Haberer registered rounds 73 (+2) and 69 (-2), and goes into the final round tied for 19th place with an even-par score of 142.
Junior Jakob Melin tallied five birdies on the day to end the day tied for 23rd at two-over.
From Coach Haas:
"It's always nice to finish strong like we did, and having the best round in the afternoon got us back in the mix. We had two guys shoot 72 and everybody else was under par in the second round, that's a good sign. It will be a good shootout tomorrow, the weather looks great with three teams battling for the title. Furman is on their home course, and Texas A&M is a very good team. We're looking forward to the challenge ahead. Go Deacs!"
