Wake Forest Concludes Play at ITA Carolina Regional

The Demon Deacons had two doubles teams advance to the quarterfinals, while graduate student Anna Zhang advanced to the round of 16 in singles competition.
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Wake Forest women's tennis team wrapped up competition at the 2024 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Carolina Regional in Chapel Hill on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 19) after putting together some impressive performances in both singles and doubles competitions.
Graduate student Anna Zhang and junior Whitley Pate advanced to the quarterfinals of the doubles bracket, picking up wins against Charleston Southern's Moore/Davidson (8-5) in the Round of 32 and an 8-6 victory over Duke's Krug/Yu in the Round of 16.
Junior Nevena Carton and freshman Kady Tannenbaum also advanced to the quarterfinals of the doubles tournament, picking up three wins in the process, including an upset victory over No. 27 Hamner/Carnicella (South Carolina), 8-7 (9-7), in the Round of 32.
In singles action, Zhang led the way for the Demon Deacons as she advanced to the Round of 16 after picking up two straight set victories in the opening two rounds of competition.
In total, seven Demon Deacons saw action in the main draw of the tournament, including Tannenbaum and fellow freshman Brianna Baldi, who both advanced from the qualifying rounds to play in the main bracket. Baldi also picked up a ranked victory over No. 86 Zampardo (NC State), 6-2, 4-6, 6-4, to advance to the Round of 32, joining Pate, Zhang, and redshirt sophomore Krystal Blanch.
The Demon Deacons will return to Chapel Hill in three weeks to compete in the ITA Sectional Championships. The four-day event is currently scheduled to begin on Thursday, Nov. 7 and will continue to Sunday, Nov. 10.

"It was a pretty good regionals performance. Tough losing a couple of doubles tiebreakers today that would have given us two teams in the semis, but more important than the wins and losses this weekend was how we played and competed. The freshmen both had a really strong first regionals and went a combined 10-2 in singles in our two fall tournaments. We learned a lot about ourselves and really need to use the next six weeks to build on the good work we've done in the last six weeks."

The Demon Deacons will return to their fall schedule in three weeks, as they travel back to Chapel Hill to compete in the ITA Sectional Championships. The tournament will be held from Thursday, Nov. 7 to Sunday, Nov. 10.
