Deacs in Contention Into Final Day at Hamptons Intercollegiate
10/7/2024 8:46:00 PM | Men's Golf
EAST HAMPTON, N.Y.- With a lightning delay to start the morning, the Wake Forest men's golf team and the rest of the field started play later and were unable to finish the second round at the Hamptons Intercollegiate due to darkness.
Three Deacs completed their first two rounds, and the rest will resume play tomorrow at 8:10 a.m. with the third round following immediately after. Players will continue to the third round with the same groups as the first and second rounds.
As a team, the Deacs turned in a nearly complete two round score of 569 (+1), and are in contention for their second title of the 2024-25 season.
Senior Marshall Meisel ended the first day as the top finisher for the Demon Deacons, carding a two-under 70 in the first round. He ended round one with three consecutive birdies to earn himself a solid spot on the leaderboard.
Meisel, through 36 holes, sits at one under-par and just eight strokes off the individual lead and is tied for eighth.
Sophomore Kyle Haas sits T11 with an even-par score of 144. Four birdies on his second 18 aided in the recovery from a double bogey on his last nine of the first round.
Haas leads the tournament in pars, carding a total of 23.
After shooting seven over-par in his first round, sophomore Tom Haberer battled back with a low five-under 67 in his second. He ended the second round with four birdies between the fifth and ninth holes and was able to carry that momentum through the rest of the round with a flawless back nine.
Haberer climbed 27 spots up the leaderboard and heads into round three holding a share of 16th.
Senior Scotty Kennon and junior Jakob Melin both have a nearly completed second round, both having two holes left to play. Kennon is currently T19, while Melin is T48.
Playing as an individual, senior Collin Adams carded an eagle on hole No. 13 in both round one and round two. With three holes left to play in round two, Adams sits at five over-par and tied for 32nd.
Play will pick up at 8:10 a.m. on Tuesday for the conclusion of the round. Players will continue to the third round with the same groups.
