Four Home Runs and Dominant Pitching Lead Deacs to 14-2 Victory

2/23/2024 8:42:00 PM | Baseball

Lefthander Josh Hartle moved over the 200 career strikeout milestone en route to his 20th career win while Adam Tellier’s multi-home run performance paced the Wake Forest offense.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Wake Forest baseball team improved to 33-3 at David F. Couch Ballpark over the last two seasons as the Demon Deacons cruised to a 14-2 victory over Dayton Friday night.

In his second start of the season, junior lefthander Josh Hartle continued to cement his place in Wake Forest history, crossing over his 200 career strikeout mark and his six strikeouts Friday night now put him 31 away from cracking the top-10 in program history.

His second win of the season and 20th victory of his career now moves Hartle just two wins away from entering the top 10 in program history.

On offense, graduate transfer infielder Adam Tellier continues to be on a tear to start the season. Tellier homered twice including the first inside-the-park of the season coming in the fifth. He finished 3-of-4  at the plate with a solo shot in the second and four RBIs on the night.

The fourth-inning seven spot was highlighted by a left center blast from senior Jake Reinisch. The grand slam was his second homer of the season and put the game out of reach at 9-2.

After a strong, 6.0 inning performance from Hartle, righthander Ben Shenosky came in and shut the door, throwing a nearly flawless 3.0 innings of work. The sophomore gave up just one hit and a walk while fanning a pair of Flyer batters for his first career save.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Hartle surrendered a four-pitch walk to the leadoff hitter but settled in with a fielder's choice and 1-6-3 GDP to get out of the top of the first inning with just eight pitches thrown.
  • Facing the bases loaded with no outs, Hartle escaped the second with a comebacker to the mound, a strikeout looking and a nice play by third baseman Adam Tellier to get out of the inning unscathed.
  • After a leadoff walk from senior Jake Reinisch to start the bottom of the second, Austin Hawke drove in his eighth run in five games to give the Deacs a 1-0 advantage with a single to right center.
  • The Flyers answered with a run of their own in the top of the third.
  • Tellier's second bomb of the season put the Deacs back on top, as the graduate transfer deposited a 2-0 pitch over the wall in right field.
  • Dayton responded in the fourth with a solo shot of their own.
  • The Deacs erupted for seven innings in the home half of the fourth to seize control of the ballgame.
    • Catcher Tate Ballestero started the inning with second double of the year to left center.
    • Freshman Cam Nelson recorded his second RBI reaching on a fielder's choice back to the pitcher.
    • Shortstop Marek Houston plated Hawke with his second hit of the night.
    • The big blow of the inning came on a first pitch ambush with the bases loaded by Reinisch for his first homer of the season to put the Deacs up, 9-2.
  • After another Houston single that plated Hawke for the second time that evening, Tellier took a second pitch to left center that bounced off the wall and kicked into center field allowing the Ada, Mich. native to scamper around the bases for his third homer of the year.
  • Hartle closed his night by retiring eight-straight Flyers to keep the lead at seven.
  • Sophomore Jack Winnay launched his first career homer deep into the night to cap the scoring for the Deacs with a two-run shot in the eighth inning.
  • Righthander Ben Shenosky came in and shut the door, throwing a nearly flawless 3.0 innings of work. The sophomore gave up just one hit and a walk while fanning a pair of Flyer batters for his first career save.

His second home run in the fifth when he banged a line drive off the left center wall that kicked away from the centerfielder. Tellier came all the way around to score, becoming the first Demon Deacon to have an inside-the-park home run since Tommy Hawke against UNC Greensboro on Feb. 21, 2023.
    • His four-RBI performance is tied for the most by a Demon Deacon this season.
  • On the mound, Josh Hartle shoved in his second outing of the season to claim his 20th victory of his Wake Forest career, putting him two wins away from entering the top 10 in program history. Also his six strikeouts put him at 204 for his career, moving him within 31 strikeouts of the Wake Forest top 10.

STAGGERING STATISTICS

FROM COACH WALTER
"Good team win today. I was really pleased with our at-bats. They were much better than they had been for the last four games. Pleased with the work the guys did for the last two days to come out here and have much better at-bats. Josh Hartle, was a little shaky early, didn't have the command he usually has. He settled in there and I thought threw the ball better and better as the game went on, which is pretty characteristic of Josh. He did a good job of getting stronger throughout the start." - head coach Tom Walter
