She became the first Demon Deacon since 2018 to earn the honor.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- After a doubles win and a match-clinching singles victory this past weekend, Wake Forest women's tennis player Krystal Blanch has been named ACC Freshman of the Week as announced by the league office Tuesday afternoon.
It marked the first ACC Rookie of the Week honor for a Wake Forest player since Eliza Omirou accomplished the feat on Feb. 27, 2018.
Against Old Dominion on Saturday (Feb. 3), Blanch earned a dominant 6-1 doubles victory with senior Casie Wooten over the Monarch's Viktorovich and Isaacs. In singles, she clinched the match with a comeback (1-6, 6-4, 6-3) win against Ulyana Romanova.
She is the second Wake Forest player to earn an ACC weekly award this season, as Wooten claimed ACC Player of the Week on Jan. 16.
"We're excited to see Krystal win freshman of the week.," head coach Jeff Wyshner said. "She and Casie were dominant in doubles for us against Old Dominion, and after a rough first set, she was really tough to come back and get the clinching point for us in our win. That's exactly the type of mental toughness you love to see from any player, let alone a freshman."
So far this season, the redshirt freshman has posted a 2-1 singles record, with her first-career victory coming two weeks ago against FIU (Jan. 28) at the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Gainesville, Fla. In doubles, Blanch is 4-2 with Wooten as her partner.
Blanch will be in action again in two weeks as the Deacs host a doubleheader against South Carolina and Campbell on Saturday, Feb. 17.
