Deacs in Contention for Second Team Title at Valspar

PALM CITY, Fla.- Battling a star-studded field Monday, the Wake Forest men's golf team is well positioned going into the final day of the Valspar Collegiate Invitational, finishing day one in second place with a score of 564 (-4), ahead of multiple ranked teams.
The field includes 11 of the top 25 teams in the country with the Deacs currently sitting ahead of 10 of those teams and trails just No. 11 Florida State. Wake Forest is currently in front of No. 1 North Carolina, No. 3 Vanderbilt, No. 4 Arizona State, No. 6 Alabama, No. 13 Arkansas, No. 14 Oklahoma, No. 18 Texas, No. 23 Texas A&M and No. 25 Duke.
Strong performances by junior Marshall Meisel and senior Michael Brennan helped push the Deacs to a solid day one finish.
Meisel led the Deacs, ending the day tied for third and carding the lowest score for the Deacs on Monday with a 66 (-5) in the second round. Meisel got hot in round two, tallying an eagle and three consecutive birdies on the front nine.
Meisel goes into the final round four strokes off the individual lead and 5-under-par for the tournament.
Brennan had a low opening round score of 68 (-3) and made five birdies in round two, ending in seventh on the individual leaderboard. He is just one stroke back of Meisel at 4-under-par through 36 holes of play.
In round two, sophomore Andrew McLauchlan made an eagle on hole No. 9 and ended the round even, helping pace the Deacs to a second place.
In the opening round, junior Scotty Kennon turned in a key 1-under-par round to help pace the Deacs early in the day.

"The guys played great today and battled all day, and we are right there. If we get off to a good start tomorrow, we will have a chance at the end. A lot to play for tomorrow. Go Deacs!"
Round Two
Teams will tee off beginning at 8:30 A.M. tomorrow. Wake Forest is paired with Arizona State, Florida State and Vanderbilt.
