Marek Houston

Five Demon Deacons Homer as Wake Forest Downs UNC Greensboro, 9-2

4/2/2024 10:03:00 PM | Baseball

Sophomore Marek Houston led the team with three hits, three runs scored and two RBI including his solo shot in the bottom of the second.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Behind five long balls from five separate players, No. 21 Wake Forest defeated triad rival UNC Greensboro, 9-2, inside David F. Couch Ballpark Tuesday evening.

Sophomore Ben Shenosky got the start and went two scoreless innings with just two base runners allowed and two strikeouts as he improved to 3-2 on the year.

In relief, freshman Blake Morningstar retired all six batters faced in just 22 pitches.

Redshirt junior Crawford Wade returned to the mound for the first time in 403 days, tossing a scoreless top of the fifth on just seven pitches.

Sophomore Joe Ariola, and graduate transfer David Falco Jr. each added a scoreless inning of work as the Demon Deacons (18-10) took a commanding 8-0 lead into the latter innings.

Making his season debut, graduate student Cole Roland sandwiched a strikeout between a pair of ground balls back to him to complete the win for the Deacs in the ninth.

Offensively, Marek Houston extended his hit streak to eight-consecutive games as the sophomore finished 3-of-4 with a home run, three runs scored and two RBI. It was his third-consecutive multi-hit game and third overall with at least three hits. During his hitting streak, Houston is 18-for-39 (.462) at the plate with 15 runs scored from the leadoff spot.

Hitting right behind Houston in the order, graduate transfer Adam Tellier became the first ACC player this season to reach 10 home runs and 10 stolen bases after his solo shot in the bottom of the fourth. He finished the night 3-for-5 with two RBI.

The graduate transfer ranks second on the team in homers behind sophomore Jack Winnay and leads the team in swiped bags, while sitting inside the top 10 in the conference in both. Additionally, he has now knocked in a team-high 31 runs.

Junior Seaver King opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning with a two-run homer to left center and finished the evening 2-for-3. Fellow junior Nick Kurtz along with Winnay each went yard in the two and three holes, respectively.

For Kurtz, it marked his third homer in the last two games and tied Bill Merrifield (1981-83) for eighth all-time with 45 career home runs.

Freshman Antonio Morales notched the first base hit of his career with a double to left center in the bottom of the eighth.

FROM COACH WALTER
"That was a great team win that we needed. It was really great to see Crawford Wade and Cole Roland back out there. They were both outstanding tonight and I was thrilled with their performances. Offensively, we certainly did enough to win tonight. Marek Houston had a great day at the plate. Nick Kurtz continued to swing the bat well. We got production up and down the line.

Ben Shenosky and Blake Morningstar set the tone and the rest of the staff pieced it together. The key to the game was the Dave Falco bridge inning. He came in with bases loaded and nobody out when the game was still in question. He got three big outs and kept the score right where it was. Again, that was a great team win and we have to get ready for Virginia Tech now."  - head coach Tom Walter
