Deacs Turn Attention to Sunday Rubber Game against Notre Dame

4/27/2024 10:56:00 PM | Baseball

Freshman reliever Blake Morningstar tossed a career-high 3.1 innings of one-hit relief.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – After a 4-3 victory on Friday night, the Wake Forest baseball team goes into Sunday with a chance to take the series in the rubber game after Notre Dame evened the series Saturday by the final score of 11-3.

Second baseman Adam Tellier tied the team lead with his 18th multi-hit effort of the campaign, finishing the night 2-of-3 with a pair of hard-hit singles in the sixth and seventh innings.

For the ninth time in the last 19 games, junior Seaver King drove in a pair of runs with his single up the middle in the sixth. The Athens, Ga. product paces the Deacs with 16 multi-RBI efforts in his first season donning the Old Gold & Black.

Freshman Blake Morningstar was a bright spot on the mound for the Deacs, setting new career highs in innings pitched and strikeouts. The righty retired 10 of the 13 batters he faced, allowing just one hit with season-high six punchouts over 3.1 innings.

Sophomore righty Ben Shenosky added a pair of strikeouts in a scoreless inning of work in the seventh.

With a pair of walks, junior Nick Kurtz moved his career total to 157 walks. He is 13 walks away from second in program history and 23 away from tying the program record.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • First baseman Nick Kurtz reached scoring position with a two-out walk and stolen base but the Deacs were unable to strike first in the top of the first.
  • Notre Dame scored three in the first to grab an early lead.
  • The Irish added four runs in the second inning to lead, 7-0.
  • Freshman Blake Morningstar kept the Irish off the board in the third with a pair of strikeouts.
  • Morningstar needed just 11 pitches to get through the bottom of the fourth.
  • The righty reached a new career high with two more punchouts in the fifth, tossing a career-best 3.2 innings with six strikeouts.
  • Wake Forest got on the board with three runs in the top of the sixth to cut the deficit down to four.
    • Shortstop Marek Houston led the inning off with a four-pitch walk and moved into scoring position on a single to center by graduate transfer Adam Tellier
    • Kurtz's second walk of the night loaded the bases with nobody out.
    • Senior Jake Reinisch plated the Deacs first run of the contest with a sacrifice fly that nearly left the yard to move everyone up 90 feet.
    • Third baseman Seaver King roped a 3-1 pitch back up the middle to plate a pair for his team-leading 16th multi-RBI effort of the year.
  • The Irish answered with a two-run homer in the bottom half.
  • Sophomore Ben Shenosky struck out a pair of Irish hitters in a scoreless seventh inning of work.
  • Notre Dame added two runs in the bottom of the eighth to take the middle game of the series, 11-3.

FROM COACH WALTER
"Obviously, a disappointing loss in tough conditions today. A couple of balls in the first inning got in the wind and carried out. We had a chance to get off the field in the second inning with two outs and nobody on with only one run in there in the first. They scored two more with two outs and nobody on in the first and then added four runs in the second with two outs and nobody on. That's six runs with two outs and nobody on in the first two innings. We just have to do a better job. There were a few defensive plays that we didn't and some pitches that we didn't make. We didn't do a very good job today against Radel. Give him credit, he was throwing both of his pitches for strikes down in the zone. We have to have a better offensive approach tomorrow and I have no doubt that we'll come ready to play."  - head coach Tom Walter
