5/24/2024 11:01:00 PM | Men's Golf
CARLSBAD, Calif.- The No. 29 Wake Forest men's golf team opened play at the 2024 Men's Golf NCAA Championship at the Omni La Costa in Carlsbad, Calif. on Friday and the Deacs are currently above the cutline.
After 18 holes of stroke play, the Demon Deacons finished tied for fifteenth with a score of 298 (+10). Wake Forest is tied with No. 21 Texas A&M, and sits ahead of four top-fifteen nationally ranked teams including No. 5 Tennessee, No. 6 Florida State, No. 11 Texas Tech and No. 13 Oklahoma. Additionally, Wake Forest goes into round two just three strokes off the match play cutline.
The Deacs were led by freshman Tom Haberer and senior Michael Brennan who both posted impressive rounds despite battling rainy conditions throughout the day. Both Deacs finished the round even with a score of 72, pacing the Deacs.
Brennan tallied five birdies in round one; the most of any Demon Deacon for the round. As a team, Wake Forest led the field in bridies on the day, totaling 16 Friday.
Four out of five Deacs ended their round on a high note with a birdie on the par-five 605-yard eighteenth hole, helping the Deacs get their score in and have one of the best team scores out of the morning wave.
Saturday's second round will begin at 3:22 p.m ET. Wake Forest will be paired with No. 27 Purdue and No. 28 Stanford off hole No. 10. After the conclusion of the second round, the pairings will be determined based on the team standings.

From Coach Haas:
"The course was difficult today. We just had a bad stretch of holes towards the end of the round, but it's always nice to have four guys birdie the last hole which puts us right in the middle of the pack. The weather was not as good as I thought this morning, but the guys handled it well. First wave off at noon tomorrow, so we need to be ready to play. It is very important that we stay in the morning wave. The course is very difficult and the greens are extremely firm. If you play well and keep the ball in play, you can shoot a good score. Go Deacs!"
