MANAKIN-SABOT, Va.-- Wake Forest men's golf alum Evan Beck defeated Bobby Massa at the 43rd U.S. Mid-Amateur final on Thursday at Kinloch Golf Club, earning an exemption into the 2025 U.S. Open at Oakmont (Pa.) Country Club and likely an invitation to next April's Masters and spot on next year's USA Walker Cup team.
Through a 36-hole match play final, Beck defeated Massa, winning 9 & 8.
Beck had a commanding lead in the 36-hole championship match, leading Bobby Massa 8-up into the final 18 holes in Virginia.
Beck wasted no time from the start, going 2-up through three holes and 5-up through nine holes.
The Virginia Beach native has racked up some mid-amateur trophies, winning the 2024 Coleman Invitational, 2024 George Thomas Invitational and recently making the final 16 at the Crump Cup.
Beck, who is ranked No. 5 in the AmateurGolf Mid-Am Rankings and No. 32 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking/WAGR, becomes the fourth player in U.S. Mid-Amateur history to play in consecutive finals, joining Jim Stuart (1990-91), George Zahringer (2001-02) and Nathan Smith (2009-10).
Beck's Senior Season at Wake Forest (2013)
Evan Beck had one of the most consistent seasons in school history. Beck was named a Golfweek and GCAA PING All-American twice, and earned two time All-ACC honors. During his final season as a Deac, Beck led the team with a 71.8 scoring average, finishing in the top-10 in seven of his 10 events and finished outside of the top-20 just once.
