Deacs In Position to Push Past National Powers in the Final Round of Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational

9/30/2024 7:51:00 PM | Men's Golf

FORT WORTH, Texas- After 36 holes, the Wake Forest men's golf team finished rounds one and two of the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational on Monday. In round two, all five Deacs posted better scores than the previous round, moving the team up the leaderboard by one position.

At the end of two rounds, the Deacs landed in 14th place and turned in an all-around score of 581 (+22).  As a team, the Deacs were 10 strokes better in the second round and are in position to push past national powers in the final round as they are just four strokes outside of the top 10.

Additionally, only 10 players out of the 75 player field ended the day under-par. The 15-team field includes half of the top 10 and 12 of the nation's top 25 teams according to the 2024-25 Bushnell/Golfweek Division I Coaches Poll.

Senior Scotty Kennon had a strong second round, ending even and moving thirteen spots up the individual leaderboard. Kennon leads the Deacs holding a share of 24th.

Sophomore Tom Haberer had a tournament-high 31 pars over two rounds, ending the round at 5-over and sitting tied for 39th.

Junior Jakob Melin started round two with back-to-back birdies, and tallied another birdie on the No. 11 par 5, ending the day tied for 47 at 6-over.

Sophomore Kyle Haas sits tied for 58 at 8-over-par, and graduate student DJ Francey ended the day at 16-over-par in 75th place.

Tee times for the final round on Tuesday will begin as early as 8:00 a.m.

From Coach Haas:

"We're going to need a solid round tomorrow. We played much better this afternoon than our score indicates, we actually had one of the better rounds going on the course. We just have to get it cleaned up at the end. This course is very penalizing if you get just a little out of play. We have lots to play for tomorrow, and I feel like we're going to have a really good day. Go Deacs!"
