Wake Forest, Gardner-Webb Meet in Friday Night Clash

The Demon Deacons and Running' Bulldogs will meet in Boiling Springs for the first time.

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Wake Forest men's soccer will conclude a two-match roadtrip on Friday night, facing Gardner-Webb at Greene-Harbison Stadium. 

Kick-off for the match is scheduled for 7 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+. 

The Matchup
  • Wake Forest (1-1-1) and Gardner-Webb (2-0-1) will meet for the second-straight season, this time in Boiling Springs after a 4-0 Demon Deacons victory last season at Spry Stadium. 
  • The Demon Deacons are coming off a 1-1 draw with then-No. 21 UCF last Saturday in Orlando and concluded the opening weekend of the 2024 campaign with a 3-2 comeback victory over Central Arkansas. 
  • Like their early season matchup in 2023, the Runnin' Bulldogs are undefeated entering the contest with the Deacs. 
  • After beginning the 2024 season with a 3-2 victory at Houston Christian, Gardner-Webb drew 1-1 with Incarnate Word before defeating Barton College 3-1 on Sunday. 
Last Time Out
  • Facing a talented and veteran squad on the road, Wake Forest last Saturday recorded a 1-1 draw with then-No. 21 UCF in Orlando. 
  • Despite the Knights taking a 1-0 lead early in the second half, Wake Forest tied the match in the 77th minute courtesy of freshman Pariss Mitchell's first collegiate goal. 
  • Senior goalkeeper Trace Alphin, who was making his 38th consecutive start, recorded three saves.  
  • In the match, freshman Daniel Krueger earned his first collegiate start and logged 71 minutes of action while junior transfer Basit Umar made his Wake Forest debut in his first match since Oct. 7, 2023.  
Scouting the Runnin' Bulldogs 
  • Gardner-Webb is undefeated through its first three matches of the 2024 season, scoring victories over Houston Christian and Barton College along with a 1-1 draw with Incarnate Word. 
  • In the attack, Elias Khodri has scored a goal in all three matches while Lucas Mauro tallied a brace in the victory over Barton. 
  • Alan Horrocks has started all three matches in goal for the Runnin' Bulldogs, recording five saves. 
  • Friday's match will be the fifth installment in the all-time series between the Demon Deacons and Runnin' Bulldogs. 
  • Wake Forest holds a 4-0-0 lead in the all-time series against Gardner-Webb. 
  • In last season's 4-0 victory at Spry Stadium, four different goal scorers contributed to the result as Wake Forest earned the second of seven clean sheets on the campaign.  
Looking Ahead
  • Wake Forest will return to Winston-Salem for a matchup with Radford on Monday, Sept. 9 at Spry Stadium. 
  • It will mark the first meeting between the two programs since Oct. 5, 1999.
