Wake Forest will now head to Dallas for a first-round ACC tournament match against SMU on Wednesday, Nov. 5.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – On a night that saw the program recognize four incredible seniors, the Wake Forest men's soccer team (7-3-6, 2-3-3 ACC) won its regular season finale with a 3-0 decision over Notre Dame (8-5-4, 3-3-2 ACC) at Spry Stadium Friday evening.

The Demon Deacons finished 10th in the ACC standings on nine points which has them matched up with SMU in the first round of the ACC tournament. The Deacs and Mustangs will battle in Dallas on Nov. 5 as Wake Forest will look to defend its ACC crown.

With a win on Wednesday, the Demon Deacons would advance to take on either Stanford on the road or Boston College at home on Sunday, Nov. 9.

On his senior night, Vlad Walent had the opener as he converted from the spot in the 38th minute and put the Demon Deacons in front before the break. It marked Walent's first goal of the season and his first since Nov. 19, 2023 against Indiana. He also reached 20 career points (six goals, eight assists).

Freshman Chandler Young won the penalty for the third-time this year, with clever work in the box.

Senior Cooper Flax doubled the lead in the 60th minute with a beautiful shot from distance after great play from Walent and Umar to set him up.

The third and final goal of the night came on a perfectly executed counter from the Deacs as Flax drove forward with the ball before finding Tate Lorentz in the box, who played a perfect ball across the face of goal for a tap-in for Jeffrey White

It marked the third goal of the year for White and fourth of his career while Lorentz picked up his fifth assist.

Now sitting on seven goals and seven assists for a team-high 21 points with a goal and an assist tonight, Flax leads the team in the big three statistical categories and continues to rank among the ACC's elite in total points and goal contributions.

The 2024 All-American has now totaled 19 career goals, moving to sole position of 20th on Wake Forest's all-time scoring list. He is also one of just two ACC players this season with at least seven goals and seven assists, along with Ransford Gyan (Clemson), underscoring his all-around impact as both scorer and creator.

Defensively, Wake Forest earned its sixth clean sheet of the season and second in ACC play. The Deacs only allowed eight shots and three shots on-goal throughout the 90 minutes.

In goal, Jonah Mednard finished with three saves which brought his total to 49 on the year, good for third in the ACC. Owen Barnett entered and played the final eight minutes of the contest.

In total, 25 Demon Deacons contributed to the victory.

How it Happened
  • The two sides felt each out over the opening stages until Notre Dame recorded the first shot of the evening in the 10th minute as it sailed off target.
  • Wake Forest responded a minute later as great link-up play from Torbic and White led to a close-ranged effort from the latter that was blocked behind for a corner.
    • White had another attempt blocked in the 21st minute.
  • Young was the first player for either side to test the keeper as he did so in the 28th and won another corner in the process.
  • The breakthrough finally came in the 38th minute, as Young won his third penalty of the season before Walent converted from the spot for his sixth-career goal.
  • Mednard made an easy save at the end of the half to send Wake Forest into the locker room with a 1-0 lead.
    • The Deacs held a 7-to-3 advantage in shots over the first 45 and controlled 56 percent of the ball.
  • Belal had the first shot of the second half in the 57th minute, but it was blocked
  • Flax buried a shot from distance for his seventh goal of the season in the 60th to make it 2-0 in favor of the home side.
  • The Deacs struck again just four minutes later, as Lorentz and Flax combined beautifully on the counter before setting up White for a composed finish in the 64th minute that made it 3-0.
  • From there, Wake Forest controlled the tempo and managed the game effectively, limiting the Irish to just a few half-chances late on.
  • Mednard made a pair of comfortable saves to preserve the clean sheet before making way for Barnett in the 82nd minute, who saw out the remainder of the contest.
  • Wake Forest earned a 3-0 senior night victory.

From Coach Muuss
"What a great win at home against a really good Notre Dame team. I thought the guys, from start to finish, were totally about what we wanted to do. When you get a group of guys that believe and play the brand I think we did today, I thought that was Wake Forest football at its best. We got to play every healthy guy on the roster in an ACC game, that doesn't get to happen that often. I want to thank the fans that came out for the last regular season home game here at Spry on a Halloween night. It was great and I'm glad the guys gave him something to celebrate tonight."
