For the second-consecutive round, the Deacs had the low round of the tournament and junior Tom Haberer charged up the individual leaderboard to finish second.
EAST HAMPTON, N.Y.- Behind the low round on the course in the final round, the No. 25 Wake Forest men's golf team finished as the runner-up at the Hamptons Intercollegiate Tuesday afternoon, finishing as one of two teams under par.
The Demon Deacons shot a final round 286 (-2), passing up No. 3 Ole Miss to vault into second place. The nationally-ranked Deacs posted a three-round score of 860 (-2) as they also finished ahead of No. 15 Florida State and perennial power Stanford.
Wake Forest was paced by juniors Tom Harberer and Nicolas Prieto on the final day while fellow junior Kyle Haas finished off another strong tournament.
After playing the first 12 holes at 2-over-par, Harberer closed the third round with authority. He tallied a pair of eagles on the par-5 13th and 15th to move to 2-under for the day and then added another birdie on No. 16 to vault him into a tie for second place on the individual leaderboard. This is the second-consecutive runner-up finish for the Hildesheim, Germany native this season and third top-5 finish in three starts, posting a three-round score of 213 (-3).
Prieto used a final round 70 (-2) to help him secure his second top-10 finish of the season, tying for sixth on the individual leaderboard. He posted four birdies to just two bogeys Tuesday and tied with Haas for sixth individually. Haas claimed his second-straight top-10 finish and has ended each of the three tournaments this season tied for 11th or better.
Senior Jakob Melin also ended the Hamptons Intercollegiate inside of the top 20 after having a pair of top-10 finishes to start the season. The Göteberg, Sweden native was a counting score in all three rounds and helped the Deacs close strong as he has three birdies on the back nine Tuesday.
From Coach Haas:
"Another solid week of golf. We just ran out of holes today, but made a nice charge on the backside. A lot of positives this week to reflect on his Maidstone golf course was a wonderful setting for this event. Thank you to the membership for allowing these guys to experience such a great course. We will be back in action in Charleston next week as we continue to make the Black & Gold proud. Another solid week by Tom, Kyle and Nick is very gratifying to see as a coach. Coach Van and I love their attitudes and their fight, which is what golf is all about. Go Deacs!"
