Deacs Look to Continue Perfect Start

The Demon Deacons will look to improve to 5-0 for the first time since the 2021-22 season when the Deacs won the first seven games of the season.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – After winning the first four games to start the season, the Wake Forest women's basketball team will look to continue its perfect start to the season Thursday at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum, playing host to NC Central for an 8 p.m. tipoff.
 
The Demon Deacons (4-0) are coming off a perfect opening week propelled by 17.3 assists per game, multiple dominant performances in the paint including having over 40 in the last three games. The Deacs saw the emergence of multiple new additions throughout the week including an Opening Night double-double from freshman Milan Brown and back-to-back double-digit scoring efforts from redshirt junior guard Raven Preston. Going into week three, the Deacs ranked 23rd nationally and fifth in the ACC, holding opponents to just 31.0 shooting from the field while also ranking 69th with 42.8 rebounds per game.
 
The Eagles (1-3) lone win this season came against UNC-Asheville last week, winning by 13 points. Most recently, NC Central dropped a 75-60 contest against College of Charleston on Tuesday night with four players finishing in double figures scoring. Thursday will be the second road game of the season for the Eagles with the other coming on the opening day of the season against North Carolina when they lost, 90-42, against the Tar Heels. They have two players averaging double figures in scoring with graduate student guard Aniya Finger leading the way with 12.5 points per game.
 
Tipoff for Thursday is scheduled for 8 p.m. (ET) at LJVM Coliseum.

Charlotte Observer Player of the Year Holland Signs with Wake Forest
Head coach Megan Gebbia announced the addition of the  2025 Charlotte Observer Player of the Year in Oshauna Holland on National Signing Day.

On the heels of a perfect 4-0 start to the season including an Opening Night win against Radford, a 37-point win against Presbyterian, a 29-point victory over Hampton and a career-high performance from Grace Oliver in a win against Mercer, Gebbia and the Demon Deacons carried that momentum into National Signing Day.

Holland has been one of the best players in the state of North Carolina throughout her prep career, amassing 2,246 career points which leads all active players in the state and ranks 17th nationally among all active high school players in the country.

In three seasons, she has averaged 25 points per game, along with 8.1 rebounds, 5.8 steals and 5.6 assists.

As a junior, Holland averaged 28.7 points, 8.9 rebounds, 6.3 assists and 5.3 steals per game, leading her team to a 29-3 record. She led Stuart Cramer High School to earn the program's first NCHSAA 3A West title as a junior and their first trip to the state title game.

In the 2025 NCHSAA 3A State Final at LJVM Coliseum, Holland stole the show with 39 points and seven rebounds.

Assists On Made Baskets
Wake Forest tallied 17 total assists on the night on 24 made baskets (71.0 percent). In four games this season, the Demon Deacons have totaled 69 assists on 105 field goals (65.7 percent) which would mark the highest percentage in the Megan Gebbia era.

The Deacs did an excellent job of moving the ball last season, as they assisted on 394 of 667 made baskets this season (59.1 pct.). This was the highest assist percentage in the Gebbia era and the assist percentage ranks in the top 70 percent in the nation according to HerHoopStats.

In 2023-24, the Deacs assisted 404 of 694 made field goals (58.2 percent). 

Forcing Them Over 
The Deacs forced the Bears into 22 turnovers on Thursday, of which led to 13 points off turnovers in the game. The Deacs have forced 10 or more takeaways 71 times in the last 75 games. The 75-game stretch goes back to January of 2022. 
 
Through four games, the Demon Deacons have forced 16.3 turnovers per game.
 
Owning the Paint
The Demon Deacons had another excellent game in the paint, with 42 points posted inside while allowing the Bears to score just 22 points in the paint, a 20-point differential. 
 
Across four games, the Deacs have totaled 172 points in the paint including having over 40 in the last three games. 
 
Sharpshooting Deacs 
Wake Forest finished Opening Night with seven threes including four from junior guard/forward Mary Carter
 
The Deacs finished the 2024-25 season knocking down 159 threes (5.5 3FGM per game). This included seven games with eight or more threes made. 
 
Through the first three seasons under head coach Megan Gebbia, the Demon Deacons have hit 590 threes in 95 games under her direction (6.2 3FGM per game).

  • Grace Oliver finished the night with a career-high 21 points on 10-of-13 shooting from the field while also having seven rebounds in the win. She finished the first half with a team-best 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting while also going 1-of-2 from the free-throw line. 
    • Oliver has now increased her point total in each of the last three games and scored double-figure points in back-to-back games.
  • Mary Carter, who also scored double-digit points in the first half, ended the night with 16 points on 5-of-11 shooting while also having a team-best three three-pointers made in the win.
  • Additionally, freshman forward Opal Bird collected a season-high and team-high eight assists in the win to go along with a pair of rebounds and a point at the free-throw line. Her eight assists are the most by a Demon Deacon since Tamia Jones had eight assists against Virginia on Jan. 2, 2025.

  • Freshman point guard Chelsea Douglas led all scorers with 18 points, while Sandra Garcia collected 17 points.
