Five Deacs are currently in contention for individual titles
JOHNS ISLAND & HOLLYWOOD, S.C.- After a delayed start due to fog, play at the Battle at Briars Creek was suspended in the middle of the second round due to darkness. However, the Wake Forest men's golf team is in position to potentially claim their second title of the 2024-25 season, as they are just five strokes outside of first place.
Through roughly 27 holes, the Deacs end day one of the Battle at Briars Creek in sixth place with a team score of 326 (-5). The remaining second round holes along with the final round will be played tomorrow.
Senior Scotty Kennon ended the first day as the top finisher for the Demon Deacons, posting a solid two-under round of 70. Kennon is one stroke away from the individual lead and is in contention for his third collegiate title.
Seniors Marshall Meisel and Collin Adams both carded rounds of 71 in their first round, and both hold a share of 19th place. Both Meisel and Adams are just three strokes short off the individual lead, and are in contention for their first collegiate titles.
Junior Jakob Melin ended the first day of the Battle at Briars Creek tied for 33rd place at one-over par, while sophomore Tom Haberer is currently tied for 52nd place at three-over par.
Playing as an individual at The Stono, freshman Jorge Hao had a stellar first round, firing a five-under 67 and tallying eight birdies. Hao holds a share of third place, and is just six strokes off the individual lead.
Also in contention for the individual lead, sophomore Kyle Haas had a strong first round showing. Haas carded a four-under 68, and fired four birdies between holes 13 through 18 to position himself tied for sixth heading into the final round.
After shooting six over-par in his first round, junior Boyd Owens fought back in round two carding a low three-under 69 in his second. Graduate student DJ Francey currently sits at T29 at seven-over par.
Tuesday's final round at the Links at Stono Ferry will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
From Coach Haas:
"We had a three and a half hour fog delay this morning, but we roughly got in close to 27 holes for each player. If you add our morning and what we've done for our nine holes this afternoon, we are roughly around 10 under par and close to the lead. That being said, we need to play well the next 27 holes and earn our wins. Nice playing by our individuals over at the Links at Stono Ferry, with a 67 for Jorge, 68 for Kyle, and a 69 for Boyd. Go Deacs!"
