Climbing three spots up the leaderboard, the Demon Deacons were one of five teams to finish under-par in round two
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.- After a weather delay paused play during the second round of the General James Hackler Championship, the Wake Forest men's golf team had a second round push to put the team within the top five.
Through 36 holes, the Deacs climb to fifth place with a second round three-under 285. Wake Forest shot eight/nine strokes better than the previous round, and was just one of five teams to finish under-par in round two.
Scotty Kennon was the low Deac of the day, going five-under in his second round to finish the day tied for fourth. The senior's first nine holes bogey-free, making the turn at four-under after notching four birdies between holes 4 through 8. After a bogey on 15, Kennon birdied his final hole to finish the round at five under.
Kennon was the only Deac to turn in a round two score under-par, and leads the 90 player field in birdies with 11 over his two rounds.
Just four strokes off the individual lead, Kennon is in search of his third collegiate title. The Florida native claimed his second collegiate title at the 54th Furman Invitational this fall with a score of 202 (-11), the lowest 54-hole score in the history of the tournament.
After some trouble early on in his round, junior Jakob Melin bounced back after the turn and carded three birdies over his last four holes. Melin goes into the final round T21. Senior Marshall Meisel finished the day first in the field in scoring on par threes, and carded a two-over 74 to end the second round T35.
Sophomore Kyle Haas recorded a clean back nine in his second round, and goes into the final round tied for 59th at six-over par.Moving 17 spots up the individual leaderboard, sophomore Tom Haberer is currently tied for 67th place at eight-over par.
Playing as an individual, freshman Jorge Hao tallied five birdies in his second round and is tied for 17th place on the individual leaderboard. Of the 10 individuals competing, Hao is in second place.
Teams will play a final 18 holes for round three on Tuesday, March 18, with tee times starting at 9:00 a.m. The Deacs will be in the second group off the first tee with players from Baylor and Coastal Carolina.
From Coach Haas:
"We played very nicely today, heck of a round by Scotty Kennon shooting five under. As a team we moved up closer to the leaders, as all five players stayed in the round. Years of coaching tells me that when all five players are looking like they're going to count, we always have a good day. It's very important that everyone hangs in there with a good round tomorrow. We can still grab a good finish, but the most important thing is to continue to play like we did today. The Dunes Club has been a wonderful host and with some wind and weather the tournament has been run very smoothly. We are looking forward to coming back in the near future. Go Deacs!"
