After a strong second round, senior Scotty Kennon is just three strokes off the individual lead
BLUFFTON, S.C.- With an 11-shot improvement from the morning to the afternoon, the Wake Forest men's golf team sits in fourth place following the first and second rounds of the Colleton River Collegiate on Sunday.
Through 36 holes, the Demon Deacons ended day one with a team score of 587 (+11).
After shooting two over-par in his first round, senior Scotty Kennon fought back in round two carding a bogey free six-under 66 in his second. Kennon recorded the lowest round of the day for the Deacs, and the entire 80 player field.
Rising eighteen places up the leaderboard, Kennon enters round three holding a share of second place, just three strokes off the individual lead and in contention for his third collegiate title.
Sophomore Tom Haberer sits inside the top-20 after the first day of play. Haberer registered two rounds of 74 (+2) and heads into the final round tied for 20th place.
Senior Marshall Meisel tallied four birdies over two rounds to end the day tied for 37th at seven-over, while graduate student DJ Francey and junior Jakob Melin both hold a share of 45th place at eight-over.
Monday's final round will begin with tee times beginning at 7:50 a.m. starting on holes 1 & 10.
From Coach Haas:
"Today was a very tough and cool day, but the guys really battled as we finished the last hole in the dark. Tom made a birdie coming in, and Jakob played the last ones well. Marshall was solid and his score will come tomorrow. Scotty held us in today with an unbelievable 66 in the afternoon. Another solid round tomorrow can make up some ground with a special day, and that will give us a chance. Very proud of the way the team battled today, they showed great emotion and played until the very end. Go Deacs!"
