Deacs Well-Positioned After First Round of ACC Championship

4/24/2025 7:45:00 PM | Men's Golf

Three Demon Deacons carded under-par opening rounds and sit inside the top-20.

BOWLING GREEN, Ky- After 18 holes, the Wake Forest men's golf team is well-positioned heading into the next two rounds of stroke play at the ACC Championship in Kentucky.

Sitting ahead of three top-25 teams including No. 9 Florida State, No. 19 Duke and No. 25 Georgia Tech, the Deacs closed out round one strong in fifth place with a score of 286 (-2).

The Deacs were helped by three under-par rounds in the opening round with junior Jakob Melin leading the charge. The junior started off strong, tallying back-to-back birdies on his second and third holes of the day. Melin carded a two-under 70 and is tied for sixth place, just three strokes off the individual lead.

Joining Melin inside the top-20 are seniors Scotty Kennon and Marshall Meisel, who both turned in opening round scores of 71 (-1), and hold a share of 15th place. Meisel had a bogey-free two-under on his first nine, while Kennon notched 5 birdies in his first round.

Sophomore Tom Haberer ended the first round of the ACC Championship tied for 40th place at two-over par, while senior Collin Adams is currently tied for 60th place at four-over par.

Teams will play another 18 holes for round two on Friday, April 25, with tee times starting at 9:22 a.m. ET. The Deacs will be in the first group off the tenth tee with players from Cal and SMU.

From Coach Haas:

"We had a nice, solid start today against a strong field. It's always nice to make some birdies, and us making 19 was second best in the field today. The course is in great shape and the greens are excellent. We are off early tomorrow and will need to continue to play loose. We have a great group of young men on this team, and we need to continue to compete. Go Deacs!"
