WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Wake Forest Athletics is set for Deacs Day of Giving on Tuesday, April 8, an annual opportunity for Demon Deacons fans and supporters to help provide a World Class Student-Athlete Experience and to Win Championships now and in the future. This year, each sport will have a unique fundraising focus, with sport-specific match gifts amplifying the generosity of donors.
Throughout the day on Tuesday, Wake Forest Athletics and individual team accounts will rally support through coordinated social media efforts
"Deacs Day of Giving is an incredible opportunity for our loyal fans and supporters to directly impact our student-athletes and their experience at Wake Forest," said Vice President & Director of Athletics John Currie. "With sport-specific match opportunities, every contribution goes even further in supporting scholarships, facilities, and other vital resources."
Several Wake Forest coaches have expressed their excitement about Deacs Day of Giving and the direct impact it has on their programs.
Men's soccer head coach Bobby Muuss emphasized the importance of donor engagement in the new era of college athletics.
"With all the changes in college athletics, especially in Olympic Sports, it is becoming more and more essential for programs to lean on the generosity of our alumni, community, and family and friends to support our program," said Coach Muuss. "I can't tell you how much it allows us to create the best student-athlete environment and give us the best chance to compete at the national level. I speak firsthand when I say I have seen support of a program change student-athletes' lives—being able to go to summer school, have the technology to increase performance, and receive assistance to be more successful both on and off the field with both mental and physical sports performance. I encourage you to consider giving and helping us continue to mold young men's lives as we continue to push to compete for a National Championship. This cannot be accomplished without your support and generosity."
Head women's golf coach Kim Lewellen echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the role of alumni and fan support in shaping the student-athlete experience.
"We're fortunate to have a lot of alumni and fan support. I think of our fans and our alumni as just one big Wake Forest family," said Coach Lewellen. "We're fortunate to have people that are interested in giving to our program to continue and broaden our family, and to give the student-athletes here extremely memorable experiences. All that help that they provide with their support allows that to happen."
Lewellen also highlighted how donor contributions directly enhance Wake Forest Golf.
"Donor contributions help us in many ways. Primarily, it allows us to continue to keep up with technology and allows the golfers to have equipment that helps them as athletes," she said. "It also allows us to play a competitive schedule and compete at some of the best venues. The giving does a lot of things, not only to help with the student experience, which is important to me, but it also helps each player to grow and become the best golfer that they can be. With this sport meaning so much to them, the support that donors and supporters give allows these players to become better athletes."
The energy of Giving Day itself is also special for Lewellen and her team.
"We're fortunate that whether it's this particular day or other days during the year that we have people that are generous and that give to our program," said Lewellen. "It is a different and exciting day to watch the tallies go and see the names that pop in throughout the day. It just reassures me as a coach that we're providing a program where people want to be involved and meet the players, and they want to continue to be part of Wake Forest Golf. I think that's a pretty cool thing."
Additionally, the support that alumni and fans show at tournaments provides an extra boost for Wake Forest golfers.
"We are special in that regard. We have a lot of people that come to our events and get to know our players and embrace them," Lewellen noted. "It's important to have those people there that care for us and our program, especially with as many international students as we have, but also with our domestic students as well. For example, with a sport like basketball, at the game itself there's all of that fan support, encouragement, and excitement of being there and in the moment itself. Having our supporters at these events allows for our players as golfers to feel that too. I believe that helps us to perform better."
Meanwhile, Wake Forest field hockey head coach Jen Averill also emphasized the critical role that donor support plays in the program's continued success.
"At Wake Forest field hockey, we are incredibly blessed to receive gracious donations by the past, the present, and the future Deacon supporters," said Averill. "These donations by our loyal fans, friends, former family members, and players allow us to continue to evolve in this ever-changing college athletics landscape. With their commitment and belief in our mission of excellence, we will continue to develop strong, interdependent, and resilient leaders, lifetime learners, and teammates for life."
All donations will go toward the Deacon Club Scholarship Fund, ensuring Wake Forest student-athletes continue to receive top-tier education and athletic experiences. Supporters can make their contributions by visiting DeacsGive.wfu.edu.
