Wake Forest Ahead of National Powers After Round One of NCAA Championship

5/23/2025 11:55:00 PM | Men's Golf

The Deacs were led by junior Jakob Melin, shooting a team-low even par.

CARLSBAD, Calif.- The Wake Forest men's golf team closed out the first round of the 2025 NCAA Championship at the Omni La Costa in Carlsbad, California Friday afternoon.

Sitting ahead of five top-25 nationally ranked teams including Texas A&M, Virginia, UCLA, South Carolina and Tennessee, the Demon Deacons finished their opening round of tournament play with a score of 296 (+8).

The Deacs were led by junior Jakob Melin, shooting a team-low even par. Melin got off to a strong start, tallying back-to-back birdies on holes 1 and 2. The Göteberg, Sweden native recorded a hole-in-one on the 162-yard par 3 16th hole to highlight his round.

Sophomore Tom Haberer notched two birdies on the day to end his round at two-over par.

Seniors Scotty Kennon and Marshall Meisel both carded opening rounds of three-over par, while sophomore Kyle Haas ended the first round of the NCAA Championship at nine-over par.

Wake Forest will tee off in the afternoon wave tomorrow, starting at 4:07 p.m. ET with San Diego and New Mexico off hole No. 10.

From Coach Haas:

"Only eight birdies today, which is tough to shoot a good score. I thought we played alright today, but a few shots would've made a big difference. The team feels like they can play well on this course and I feel like they will play well tomorrow. We're starting off hole 10 in the afternoon and a good start will be the key. Go Deacs!"

Second Round Tee Times (All Times ET)

For the second round of the 2025 NCAA Championship, the Demon Deacons will tee off Saturday with San Diego and New Mexico, with the first tee time set for 4:07 p.m ET off hole No. 10.
