No. 10 Wake Forest To Host Villanova Wildcats

The Demon Deacons defeated the ‘Cats 1-0 last September with a game-winning goal from forward Alex Wood.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The No. 10 Wake Forest women's soccer team returns to their home pitch this Thursday, Aug. 21 for the first half of a doubleheader at Spry Stadium against the Villanova Wildcats with the men's game shortly after. 

The contest is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. and will be streamed live on ACCNX with live stats available here.

The first 200 students to attend the match will receive a free Wake Forest WSOC national finalist shirt in celebration of the 2024 College Cup success.

Adult season tickets start as low as $70 for general admission and $50 for youth while reserved chairbacks are $130 for fans and $110 for Wake Forest University faculty and staff. 

Fans can catch all of Demon Deacon home action this fall as well by purchasing combo season tickets to see both men's and women's soccer starting as low as $90 for general admission and $180 for reserved chairbacks for fans and $150 for Wake Forest University faculty and staff.

Last Time Out
  • Redshirt sophomores Valentina Amaral and Sierra Sythe each made their 20th career start. 
  • The Deacons picked up their second win of the 2025 season with a 1-0 victory over the LSU Tigers this past Sunday. 
  • The Demon Deacons tested the Tigers' goalkeeper early, recording the first three shots of the contest. 
  • Sophomore Lola Ressler broke through in the 32nd minute to record her first collegiate goal 
    • Freshman Kylie Maxwell also picked up her first career assist on the goal, along with a fifth career assist for Sythe. 
  • Through the first 45 minutes, Wake Forest maintained 54 percent possession and outshot the Tigers 5-2. 
  • LSU recorded its first shot of the contest in the 63rd minute. The Tigers created scoring opportunities in the 67th and 68th minutes with back-to-back free kicks, but Amaral held strong between the posts to keep LSU scoreless.
  • Amaral prevented an equalizer in the 77th minute on a 1v1 in the box and held strong to secure the Deacon victory.

Quick Hitters
  • Wake Forest outshot the Tigers 11-8, including three shots on target. Along with a strong performance from the backline, redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Valentina Amaral recorded her ninth career clean sheet – and the second of the season – with two saves in the shutout. 
  • On Tuesday, the ACC announced Amaral as the co-defensive player of the week for her efforts during Thursday and Sunday's matches. 
    • The Oviedo, Fla. native was one of 10 goalkeepers in the country to post back-to-back shutouts to open the season.
  • The Demon Deacons currently rank 10th on the United Soccer Coaches Poll and 17th on TopDrawerSoccer. 
  • Wake Forest wrapped the 2024 year with a 16-4-1 record, highlighted by a 9-1-1 home record at Spry Stadium. 
    • Since the 2021 season, the Deacs are 16-0-2 at home against non-conference opponents in the regular season.

What Team? Wildcats
  • Villanova enters the match 0-1-0, following a tightly contested 1-2 loss to the Michigan Wolverines. 
    • The lone goal came from sophomore Amalia Cardio and was the first of her collegiate career. 
  • The Wildcats finished 5-7-6 during the 2024 season and produced a 2-5-3 record at home. 
    • The squad tallied 18 scores on the season and saw three of their losses determined by one goal or less. 
    • Additionally, they held opponents to one goal or fewer in four of the season's six draws.
  • This year's roster features 19 returners and the addition of five freshmen and four transfers in the offseason.
    • Leading the 'Cats is goalkeeper Hannah Dickinson, who earned starts in all of her 18 appearances in net. The 2024 BIG EAST Second Team selection wrapped the past year ranked 45th nationally for saves and 70th for shutouts with seven. During last Thursday's match against the Wolverines, Dickinson faced 16 shots and logged four saves.
    • Offensively, Villanova is led by sophomore Madison Shumate, who tallied three goals, one assist and two SOGs during her freshman campaign. In 2024, Shumate led the team with two game-winning goals and had a career-high five-point performance against Temple. 

Series History vs. Villanova
  • This marks the fifth meeting in history for the programs.
  • The Demon Deacons hold a 3-1-0 record against Villanova and are 2-0-0 on home turf.
  • Wake Forest traveled to Villanova, Pa. on September 5, 2024 and defeated the Wildcats 1-0 with the lone game-winning goal scored by then junior Alex Wood.
  • The two squads met for the first time in 1996, with Wake Forest taking the 5-1 neutral-site victory.
