No. 18 Wake Forest Closes Out Non-Conference Slate with 6-2 Victory over USC Upstate

9/14/2025 3:51:00 PM | Women's Soccer

Graduate Sophie Faircloth highlighted the scoring with her first multi-goal game since Oct. 29, 2020.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The No. 18-ranked Wake Forest women's soccer team (7-1-1, 1-0-0 ACC) completed the non-conference portion of the 2025 season with a 6-2 victory over USC Upstate (3-4-1, 0-0-0 Big South) on Sunday afternoon at Spry Stadium.

After consistent early pressure from the Demon Deacons, freshman Allie Flanagan scored the contest's first goal in the seventh minute through a great individual effort. USC Upstate, however, leveled the match just minutes later before Kylie Maxwell reached 10 points on the season with her goal in the 26th minute. Upstate once again evened the scoreline with a 31st-minute strike.

In an action-packed first half, graduate Sophie Faircloth once again put Wake Forest back in front with a pair of goals in the 35th and 40th minutes. It marked the Winston-Salem native's first brace since scoring a pair against Virginia Tech on Oct. 29, 2020.

In the second half, senior Brooke Miller extended the lead with a bar down goal in the 62nd minute. Freshman Alejandra Gomez then tallied her first collegiate goal in the 67th minute with a rocket from distance.

With the result, the Demon Deacons over the last four seasons are 19-0-3 against non-conference opponents in regular season action. In those 22 games, the Deacs have outscored opponents 59-5. Additionally, Wake Forest at Spry this season has secured six clean sheets while outsourcing the opposition 16-4.

Wake Forest's six goals on the afternoon were also the most in a match since scoring six against Iona during the 2023 campaign.

Prior to the match, Wake Forest honored two seniors in Taryn Chance and Victoria Coninck.

How It Happened
  • After spending the early minutes of the match in the attacking third, the Deacs registered three shots in a 13-second span in the sixth minute, the final of which was saved by the Spartans' keeper.
  • A great individual effort from freshman Allie Flanagan put the Deacs in front 1-0 in the seventh minute, as she pushed inward on the Spartan backline before letting one go from the top of the 18.
    • The goal was Flanagan's fourth of the season – matching the team lead with sophomore Lola Ressler
  • USC Upstate was able to counter with a goal of its own in the 14th minute.
  • Sophomore Dempsey Brown hit a powerful attempt that rattled the crossbar in the 21st minute.
  • Wake Forest reclaimed the lead in the 26th minute, as freshman Kylie Maxwell took control of a blocked shot before beating the Spartan keeper to her left.
    • With the goal, Maxwell became the first Demon Deacon with 10 points on the season (3 goals, 4 assists).
  •  USC Upstate once again drew even with a 31st-minute goal.
  • The Deacs once again found themselves in front, as a perfectly placed ball into the box from Brown found junior Addison Roberts' head in the box before graduate Sophie Faircloth netted her sixth career goal.
    • The goal was the Winston-Salem native's first since Sept. 9, 2021.
  • Just five minutes later, Faircloth struck again off an inswinging cross from Sierra Sythe for her second-career brace.
  • Wake Forest went into the halftime break leading 4-2 with significant advantages in shots (22-6), corners (7-3) and possession (74 percent).
  • Maxwell took the first shot of the second half, a header that went wide of the frame.
  • The Deacs' advantage grew to 5-2 in the 62nd minute, as Brooke Miller beat the Spartan defense before ripping a ball from the top of the 18 that hit the bottom of the crossbar and found its way past the keeper.
    • The goal marked Miller's first as a Demon Deacon to go along with her four assists on the campaign.
  • Just minutes later, freshman Alejandra Gomez registered her first collegiate goal with a long-distance blast from outside the 18.
  • In total, 21 Demon Deacons contributed to the victory.

From Coach da Luz
"Proud of the team. We had positive contributions from so many players today. Upstate gave us a good game in the first half. We were able to control the second half and scored some high-quality goals. Alejandra's first goal, Faircloth scoring two in her comeback and Brooke Miller scored a stunning goal! We are in good position heading into ACC play. We will need to keep improving to make a run."
