No. 20 Wake Forest Opens Home Slate with 7-0 Victory over Longwood

9/7/2025 3:30:00 PM | Field Hockey

The Demon Deacons are now 13-6 in nonconference action at Kentner Stadium since 2021.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The No. 20 Wake Forest field hockey team used a big second half in the 2025 home opener, defeating Longwood, 7-0, on Sunday afternoon at Kentner Stadium.

The Demon Deacons (2-2) saw four different players score, including a hat trick from forward Lauren Storey and a two-goal performance from junior Mia Schoenbeck. Faye Janse and Lena Keller each added tallies, while five Deacs recorded at least one assist.

Wake Forest controlled the match from the opening whistle, finishing with a 34-1 advantage in shots and holding the Lancers (1-3) without a shot on goal.

Three different goalkeepers combined to post the shutout, as Ruby Butterfield, Ellie Todd, and Caroline Grebe split time in the cage.

How It Happened
  • Wake Forest earned its first penalty corner of the game just 1:36 into the match.
    • Junior Mia Schoenbeck scored her third goal in the last two matches on a beautiful insert from Mia Montag and stop by Flo Tuthill.
  • The Demon Deacons worked for their second corner of the match at the 6:33 mark.
    • Montag slipped behind the Lancer defense after the insert, but her shot on the slip went just wide.
  • Sophomore Lena Keller created a dangerous chance in the first two minutes of the second period, sending her shot just wide of the cage as Wake looked to double its lead.
  • Schoenbeck nearly added her second goal of the match with nine minutes remaining in the half, but a save from the Longwood goalie kept the Wake Forest lead at 1-0.
  • The Demon Deacons peppered the Longwood cage with eight shots in the frame. Despite the pressure, Wake Forest was unable to add to its advantage, carrying a 1-0 lead into halftime.
  • Wake outshot the Lancers 10-0 in the first half, as the Demon Deacons controlled play throughout the first thirty minutes of the contest.
  • Coming out of halftime, Wake Forest went on the attack once again, as Lauren Storey struck for her first goal of the season just four minutes into the third quarter to make it 2-0.
  • She struck again just six minutes later, finishing a solo effort to extend the lead to 3-0.
  • Sophomore Lena Keller capped off the frame in the 43rd minute, scoring off a feed from Reabetswe Phume to make it 4-0 heading into the final period.
  • Schoenbeck tallied her second of the day in the 46th minute, converting another penalty corner set piece with assists from Montag and Rachel Thetford.
  • Storey completed her hat trick in the 52nd minute, assisted by Ava Moore, pushing the advantage to 6-0.
  • Less than a minute later, junior Faye Janse added her second goal of the year to close the scoring at 7-0.
Quotables
"It was an outstanding team performance. We're really starting to open up the game and play to our strengths, which is utilizing our connections with our backfield to midfield, midfield to forwards. Our next level as a team is creating more midfield transfers to make ourselves more threatening in a more balanced way. Having said that, it was great to see the results in the second half, after three halves of being stonewalled. It's almost like a shooter's slump in basketball, and they were trying so hard in the first half to score that we overcomplicated it. We fought through that and found a way to really light up the scoreboard so I'm proud of our team for continuing to battle and play together." - head coach Jen Averill
