The Demon Deacons were 24-under par as a team to finish in first place as Nicholas Prieto shot 13-under par to claim the individual title
GREENSBORO, N.C.- The Wake Forest men's golf team picked up its first team title of the 2025-26 season, winning the Bryan National Collegiate on Sunday by 23 strokes. This was the 47th win under the direction of head coach Jerry Haas.
The Deacs carded a low 14-under final round giving the team a massive lead, turning in a 54-hole score of 840 (-24) for a first place finish. In a collective team effort, Wake Forest recorded 58 total birdies and 5 eagles over three rounds.
As the only team to finish under-par, Wake Forest finished their impressive performance with four players inside the top-10.
Junior Nicholas Prieto claimed his first collegiate title as a Demon Deacon with a score of 203 (-13), tying for eighth lowest 54-hole score to par in program history.
Only recording 5 bogeys throughout the tournament, Prieto's win was highlighted by three under-par rounds, 14 birdies and 2 eagles. The Miami-native led the 87-player field in scoring on par-4s and par-5s.
Senior Jakob Melin had a career weekend at the Bryan National Collegiate. The junior carded a career low 65 (-7) during round two of the tournament, and tallied 16 birdies over three rounds. Melin picked up his best career finish as a Demon Deacon, finishing in second place at 11-under par.
Junior Tom Haberer tied his career-best finish, tying for fifth place. Leading the Deacs in the opening round, Haberer carded a career-low 66 (-6).
Freshman Lorenzo Rodriguez and junior Kyle Haas also pushed Wake Forest to the team title. Rodriguez started his career as a Deac with a top-10 finish, tying for eighth place at two-under. Meanwhile, Haas carded two under-par rounds, playing his best in round three, to finish inside the top-15 in 11th place.
From Coach Haas:
"This was a really nice way to start the fall season. I feel like we're a team that will have a nice year putting, which always helps the scores and with that you make a lot of birdies. Bryan Park did a fantastic job hosting. It's nice to be associated with Mr. Melvin who is a big Wake Forest fan and of course Mr. Bryan who did so much for golf in the triad area. It's great to have Wake Forest on the Jim Melvin Trophy. Congrats to our newcomer Nick Prieto, he transferred in from Arizona State and picked up his second collegiate win today with an impressive 13-under par for three rounds. Also shout out to Jakob Melin for shooting 65 this morning and helping us have the low round of each day, very very good stuff. Freshman Lorenzo Rodriguez had a great tournament to start his career finishing in the top-10, and Tom Haberer's 66 on the first day helped put us in a great position. Also, an under-par round by Boyd Owens and a couple under-par rounds by Kyle Haas. 69 the last day by Jorge Hao, who's heading in the right direction. Can't forget Maddux Cook, a freshman that will continue to get better and better each and every event. Go Deacs!"
