No. 4 Demon Deacons Complete Unbeaten Home Stretch with Win over Campbell

9/9/2025 8:30:00 PM | Men's Soccer

Sophomore Mason Sullivan scored his first career goal as the Demon Deacons closed out their five-match homestand unbeaten.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – In the final of five-straight home matches to open the 2025 campaign, the No. 4 Wake Forest men's soccer team (4-0-1, 0-0-0 ACC) will head into conference play unbeaten as it defeated Campbell (2-2-1, 1-0-0 CAA), 1-0, Tuesday evening at Spry Stadium.

After 15 minutes of dominating the contest, the Demon Deacons found the opener in the 18th as sophomore defender Mason Sullivan headed home a brilliant ball in from senior midfielder Basit Umar. It marked the first-career goal for Sullivan as Umar and fellow senior midfielder Cooper Flax picked up assists on the tally.

Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Jonah Mednard contributed to his fourth-consecutive clean sheet. So far this season, Mednard has posted a 0.21 goals-against average and a .900 save percentage with just one goal allowed.

Of note, one goal conceded through five matches is the best defensive start for the Demon Deacons since 2008.

For the fifth-consecutive match to open the season, Wake Forest went with a starting backline of junior Travis Smith, Jr., sophomores Mason Sullivan and Amoni Thomas, and graduate captain Cristian Escribano.

The Demon Deacon defense once again excelled in limiting opportunities for the visitors and only allowed one shot on goal over the 90 minutes. Wake Forest has outshot opponents 89-to-41 through the first five matches of the season.

Additionally, this marks the first time since Oct. 1-12 (four matches) of last year that the Demon Deacons recorded four-consecutive clean sheets. Of note, the Deacs have gone 367 minutes without conceding.

With the win, the Demon Deacons are now unbeaten in their last 17 matches at Spry Stadium. Overall, the Deacs hold a 13-0-4 home record dating back to Aug. 25 of last year.

From Coach Muuss
"We just made a lot of silly mistakes in the second half. We said we didn't want the game to get end to end, and the game got end to end at the end. That's something that we didn't want to have happen. I thought we could have managed it so much better by just keeping the ball. I think it shows a lot about the guys. They wanted to go after the second goal instead of just being okay with settling in. In the end, they fought. We blocked a lot of shots at the end off some set pieces and defended some corners. Ultimately, you want to win the game right. Midweek, games are hard. Now, more importantly, we have to get ready for the ACC opener against a really good North Carolina team, so it's going to be a lot of resting and a lot of video."

Up Next
Wake Forest will now turn its attention to the ACC opener against No. 21 North Carolina in Chapel Hill on Friday, Sept. 12. This will mark the 51st-ever meeting between the two programs with the Tar Heels leading the series, 24-16-10.
