Wake Forest Advances to Third Place Match at Old Barnwell

AIKEN, S.C. - After two rounds and 36 holes of tournament play, No. 8 Wake Forest women's golf has advanced to Tuesday's third place match at Old Barnwell Derby in Aiken, S.C after defeating No. 22 South Carolina, 3-2 and falling to No. 11 Duke, 5-0.
The Demon Deacons started off the day with the lead against the Gamecocks, but fell behind by just a point. Sophomore Chloe Kovelesky and junior Macy Pate remained in control of their matches from the first hole. Although South Carolina took the first two points of the morning, the Deacs answered back.
Kovelesky was 4UP through eight holes, and despite dropping a point down on hole nine, picked right back up to defeat senior Mia Lussand, 5&4. Junior Macy Pate clinched the second point for the Deacs with a 2&1 result over freshman Molly McLean.
With the match leveled, graduate student Morgan Ketchum took the final point and the win for Wake Forest with a playoff hole victory.
Following their morning victory, the Demon Deacons faced off against No. 11 Duke for round two of the tournament. Although battling back on multiple holes to stay alive, the Deacs were unable to front enough of an effort to overtake the Blue Devils.
Wake Forest will take on No. 16 Mississippi State in round three of tournament play this Tuesday with the first tee off at 9:24 ET.
