Senior Jakob Melin claimed his fourth top 5 finish of the season.
PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. – The Wake Forest men's golf team saw its 2026 ACC Championship run come to a close after a playoff loss to Duke at Shark's Tooth Golf Course, following three rounds of stroke play on Saturday.
Leading the way for Wake Forest, senior Jakob Melin posted three under-par rounds and was the only Demon Deacon to record multiple under-par rounds. He led the 77-player field with 17 birdies over three rounds and closed with a 71 (-1) to finish at 6-under, tying for fifth and securing his fourth top-five finish of the season.
His final round helped Wake Forest to a three-day total of 867 (+3), keeping the Deacs in contention for a spot in the eight-team match play cut, but they ultimately fell to Duke after a strong fight in the final round.
Juniors Tom Haberer and Kyle Haas shot their best in the opening round, both carding scores of par or better for the Deacs. Haberer finished tied for 33rd, while Haas tied for 36th.
Freshman Lorenzo Rodriguez and junior Nicholas Prieto made their ACC Championship debuts this week, both finishing stroke play in a tie for 56th place after three rounds.
From Coach Haas:
"Very dejected group tonight as you can understand. We played well the first day and actually played pretty well day two. Today we didn't play terribly, but have to play a little better down the stretch. We were in great position with a few holes to go and we had to count five bogeys. Hats off to Duke, they played their final nine holes in nine under to tie us and then beat us in the playoff. We will be hosting regionals at Bermuda Run in three weeks. As the players have said, "21 days and counting, we will be back at it this week". We usually make a ton of birdies, no exception this week that we were in the top three teams in birdies made, but have to start cleaning up a little bit off the tee and around the greens. The players put so much effort into being great at the end of the year. We are always proud of their efforts and I know they wanted better for the Deacs. We still have regionals and then NCAAs to look forward to. The pieces are in place, we just have to put it all together. Go Deacs!"
