Deacs Tied for Third After Round One at NCAA Regionals

Three Demon Deacons sit inside the top-20.
BERMUDA RUN, N.C. – After opening with a six-under performance, the Wake Forest men's golf team sits tied for third following the first round of the NCAA Winston-Salem Regional at Bermuda Run Country Club on Monday.
As a team, the Demon Deacons counted four scores of par or better, and led the 14-team field in par-5 scoring.
Nicholas Prieto led the Deacs with a bogey-free 67 (-4). Prieto recorded an eagle on the 560-yard par-5 17th hole and opened his final nine holes with back-to-back birdies. Just one stroke off the individual lead, Prieto heads into the second round in a tie for third place.
Senior Jakob Melin and freshman Lorenzo Rodriguez each shot a 70 (-1) in the opening round of the Winston-Salem Regional, putting them in a tie for 19th place.
Maddux Cook fired 8 birdies in his opening round, the most in the 75 player field. Finishing even-par on the day, Cook is tied for 28th place.
For the second round of the Winston-Salem Regional, the Demon Deacons will tee off Tuesday with Virginia (-13) and Pepperdine (-11), with the first tee time set for 7:30 a.m. off hole No. 1.

"Good solid round today. Lots of birdies and we need to keep making them. Keeping the ball in play for the next couple of rounds will be the key. We're off early on one tomorrow, and we will need to be ready to get out of the gate. Go Deacs!"
