CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Wake Forest's volleyball team dropped a crucial ACC match to Virginia 3-0 Tuesday evening in Charlottesville, VA. With the loss, the Deacons fall out of third place in the conference to fourth with a 5-4 league record.
Wake pulled ahead 12-8 in game one, but the Cavaliers rattled off seven unanswered points for a 15-12 victory. Virginia jumped out to a 7-0 advantage in game two and cruised to a 15-7 win. The Deacs were able to come within four points in the second game, but UVa scored four quick points to close out the game. In game three, Wake never led, and trailed 8-1 in the early stages. The Deacons came back to make it a five-point game, but the Cavaliers notched four of the last five points for a 15-7 triumph.
Sophomore outside hitter Trina Maso de Moya led the Deacs with a match-high 12 kills, while senior Sara Kryder's 11 digs was a team high in that category. Freshman Ashlee Phillips and junior Julie Crowley split the setting duties and notched 22 and 11 assists, respectively. Senior middle blocker Jessica Parsons registered 12 kills and 15 digs to lead Virginia. Parsons and Deanna Zwarich both recorded four block assists and Parsons also served up a pair of aces. Mary Frances Scott had a match-high 32 assists for the Cavaliers.
Wake Forest allowed a .228 hitting percentage in the match, but struggled with a .066 percentage of its own. The Cavaliers registered eight team blocks, while Wake Forest had just one solo block.
Wake drops to 18-6 overall and 5-4 in the conference. The Deacons continue their road stint with a Friday evening match at Maryland, and another match at Duke Tuesday, October 26.
