Volleyball Falls To Tar Heels In Five Games

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - UNC defeated Wake Forest 3-2 (15-4, 15-10, 13-15, 8-15, 15-13) in an exciting ACC match Saturday at Carmichael Auditorium. The win extended the Carolina winning streak to ten matches, including ACC opponents in the last four matches.
Casey Simpson led UNC with 22 kills and 11 digs. Six Tar Heels recorded double-figures in digs, including two with 20 or more. Freshman Laura Greene led with 21 and Asa Gustavsson followed with 20. Tori Seibert also turned in a big night with 14 kills, a .323 hitting percentage and seven blocks, including four solos. Shannon Smith matched Seibert?s solos with four and added two block assists and 11 kills.
Game one was a solid win for UNC. It used a 10-0 run to open an 11-2 lead and went on to win the game 15-5. Game two was closer, as the teams battled back and forth to a 7-7 tie. From there, Carolina went on a 6-1 run to raise the lead to 13-8 and win the game 15-10.
The Heels appeared to have the match in hand, with a 2-0 game lead and a 13-9 lead in the third game. However, the Deacons went on a 6-0 run win game three and continue the match. Wake continued their good play into the fourth game. After trailing 3-0, the Demon Deacons went on a 13-2 run to lead 13-5 and then took the game 15-8.
Both teams best efforts came out in game five. After Wake took a 5-2 lead, the Tar Heels tied the game at five. From there, neither team lead by more than one point until UNC took the match at 15-13.
Wake was lead by Sharon Harmsworth, who tallied 18 kills and 12 digs. Like Carolina, the Deacons also had two players with 20 or more digs. Trina Maso de Moya had a game-high 27, to go with her 15 kills, and Julie Cowley added 21. Cowley also had 63 assists in the match and led Wake in hitting percentage at .429.
Both teams finished with more than 100 kills (Wake-106, UNC-102) as Carolina increased its record to 12-3, 4-0 in the ACC and Wake fell to 13-5, 2-3 in the ACC.
