TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Wake Forest's Trina Maso de Moya's match-high 12 kills and 14 digs lifted the Demon Deacons to a 3-0 victory over Florida State in Atlantic Coast Conference volleyball action this afternoon in Tallahassee, FL.
The Deacons held the Seminoles to just a .090 attack percentage for the match while turning in a .255 hitting performance of their own. Games one and two went neck and neck until about the 10th point at which time Wake Forest's depth proved to be a factor. Florida State recorded 20 kills in game one, but 10 costly errors against the Seminoles stifled any offensive attack they mustered in the game. Wake Forest's .311 hitting performance and 19 kills in the first game set the tone for the match. The Deacons went on to victories in the first two games and dominated game three, holding FSU to just seven kills for the set.
"Wake Forest is a solid team with a lot of offensive weapons," FSU Head Coach Dr. Cecile Reynaud said. "I think we were very competitive in the first two games, but just didn't hold on and finish the job. We had some unforced hitting errors that really hurt us and the absence of Aisha (Thornton) at the net is also a factor."
Maso de Moya's .360 hitting performance led the Deacons while Margaret Davidson and Sharon Harmsworth each added nine kills for Wake Forest. Junior setter Julie Cowley registered 23 assists. Norisha Campbell led Florida State with 10 kills, while setter Jamie Hibbard had a match-high 27 assists.
With the 15-11, 15-10, 15-6 win, Wake Forest improves to 21-6 overall and 8-4 in ACC competition. Wake Forest will travel to Elon College, NC to face the Elon Fightin' Christians in a 7 p.m. non-conference match on Tuesday, November 2.
