Wake Forest to Bring in West Coast Opponents for Home Weekend Matches

Matchups versus California and Stanford inside Varsity Arena are up next for the Demon Deacons.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Having reached the final month of the fall regular season, Wake Forest volleyball (9-12, 3-7 ACC) returns to Varsity Arena this week to begin a two-week homestand. 

The team will firstly bring in the California Golden Bears on Friday (Oct. 31) for a 6:30 p.m. matchup. On Sunday, the Deacs are set to face No. 5 Stanford. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m.

This weekend will feature the second-ever matches, and first ones at home, for the Deacs against both California and Stanford. In addition, each of the contests on Friday and Sunday will stream on ACC Network Extra.

Most recently, Wake Forest stepped into its first out-of-state weekend within conference play, visiting No. 7 SMU and No. 4 Pitt.

Fan Information
There will continue to be free admission for general admission seating for all home volleyball single matches. The team plays each home contest in Varsity Arena, located on the third level of Reynolds Gymnasium (21 Wingate Rd, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27109).

For a second straight year, 28 padded floor seats will be present inside Varsity Arena for spectator viewing along the sidelines opposite the team benches. Those interested in more information can call the Wake Forest Athletics Ticket Office at (336) 758-3322 ext. 2, open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Wake Forest Athletics is committed to providing the Best Fan Experience in North Carolina within a safe and fan-friendly environment. Friday's contest (Oct. 31) will feature a Halloween theme, featuring a post-match Trick-or-Treat and costume contest for fans that is set to take place during sets two and three. On Sunday, the program will have its annual Camper Reunion Day, as campers from past summer camps are invited back to come cheer on the Deacs and will receive a special in-venue shoutout in between sets. Following the match, the volleyball team will hold a session of autographs exclusively for campers.

No. 7 SMU 3, Wake Forest 0

This past Friday night saw the Demon Deacons visit No. 7 SMU in Dallas, ultimately falling to the host Mustangs in a 3-0 decision.

Patrycja Lagida posted a team-best 10 kills in the match, including four digs and three service aces. Friday featured the third time in the team's last five matches in which she has tallied three aces – her best single-match mark of the fall thus far.

Paige Crawford recorded a match-high 11 digs – her most in an ACC contest this season. Playing back in her home state, the Wimberley, Texas native also added eight kills. Ryleigh Whitekettle contributed seven kills.

Becca Bellows and Rian Baker registered 17 and 14 assists, respectively. Bellows also chipped in seven digs. Emma Farrell finished with eight digs.

Sunday, Oct. 26
No. 4 Pitt, Wake Forest 0

Wake Forest volleyball wrapped its out-of-state weekend up North this past Sunday afternoon, visiting No. 4 Pitt. The Demon Deacons again battled hard but suffered a 3-0 loss to the Panthers.

Paige Crawford paced the Deacs' tempo with a team-high 10 kills. Of note, the Wimberley, Texas native did so on 20 attacks with only two errors, good for a .400 hitting percentage. Crawford also added six digs to her line.

Emma Farrell had another standout defensive performance, leading all individuals with 13 digs.

Patrcyja Lagida and graduate student Ryleigh Whitekettle finished with eight and five kills, respectively. Whitekettle made three blocks as well.

Sanaa Williams posted four blocks to tie the match high. Setters Rian Baker and Becca Bellows collected 14 and 11 assists, respectively.

Efficient Hits
In three of her last four matches, middle blocker Sanaa Williams has hit over .400 from the floor. The Nashville, Tenn., native has impressed during conference play to rank sixth among all ACC individuals in hitting percentage with a .389 clip. For the season, as a whole up to date, Williams' .310 mark also leads the Deacs. She is currently first on the roster in blocks (81.0) and fourth in kills (95).

Scouting the Opposition
California is 6-14 overall with a 3-7 mark in conference play after dropping its last three matches. On the road, the Golden Bears are 2-7. Freshman setter Maria Stirbu ranks ninth in the league in assists with an 8.48 per-set average. Head coach Jen Malcom is in her second year leading the program.

Standing fifth nationally in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top-25 Coaches Poll, Stanford holds an 18-3 overall and has won nine of its first 10 ACC matchups. The Cardinal is additionally on a six-match winning streak. Among all league member schools, Stanford ranks first in points (18.37/set), hitting percentage (.302), kills (14.31/set) and assists (13.45/set). Individually, the team is paced by:
