WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Sophomore outside hitter Trina Maso de Moya recorded a game-high 24 kills as Wake Forest defeated Virginia 3-1 Saturday evening at Reynolds Gym. The Deacons used a solid offensive attack in securing the first game 15-12.
Virginia came back in the second game, however, overtaking the Deacs 16-14 to even the game score 1-1. Cavalier middle hitter Jessica Parsons recorded a team-high 23 kills in the match, which proved to be a back-and-forth battle throughout. Wake Forest came alive in the third game, winning decisively 15-6. Sophomore middle blocker Margaret Davidson and senior outside hitter Katie Horne each registered 19 kills.
The match's fourth game was a defensive struggle. The Deacons held a 13-6 lead over Virginia, but the Cavaliers had 20 kills in scoring six unanswered points. Junior setter Julie Cowley led Wake Forest with 79 assists, while Mary Frances Scott of Virginia had a team-high 64.
Wake Forest improves to 15-5 overall and 4-3 in the ACC, the team's first winning record in the conference thus far this season. The Deacons will host North Carolina A&T Tuesday, October 12 at 7 p.m. in Reynolds Gym in the third match of a four-match home stand. The team returns to league play Friday, October 15, when Duke visits Reynolds Gym in a 7 p.m. match.
