Cross Country Teams Post Top-Five Finishes At ACC Championships

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's cross country team took a fourth place finish at the ACC Championships held at the University of North Carolina, while the men's team placed third.

The Deacon women finished behind North Carolina, NC State and Virginia with a team score of 96. North Carolina won the event with a score of 44. Senior Janelle Kraus led the Deacs with an 11th place finish. She ran the 5K course in 18:08.6. It marked the first time this season she has posted an 18-plus time. NC State's Christy Nichols took first place, finishing four seconds ahead of the next runner at 17:15.

Junior Sara Day finished in 15th place with a time of 18:16.3. Senior Jill Snyder and junior Kelly Brady clocked in at 18:175 and 18:21.1, respectively. Snyder took 18th place, while Brady was close behind in 19th. Junior Kathleen Kuhnert, in her first meet of the season, ran the course in 18:58.1 to finish in 33rd place. Alison Anibaldi, a senior, finished with a time of 19:03.3, good for 35th place. Sophomore Valerie Waldron placed 42nd after clocking in at 19:16.8. Junior Erin Haugh did not finish for the Deacons.

The men's cross country team finished in third place behind NC State and Duke with a team score of 99. NC State won the event easily, posting a score of 16, 54 points ahead of the second-place Blue Devils. Chan Pons took medalist honors for NC State, who placed five of the top-six runners.

Sophomore Michael Altieri was Wake's top finisher, running the course in 25:21.7 for a 12th-place finish. Chris Estwanik, also a sophomore, placed 15th with a time of 25:25.5. Sophomore Sean Nagorny took 21st after completing the race in 25:48.2. Freshman Ed Acosta and sophomore Garick Hill finished in 26th and 27th places, respectively. Acosta had a time of 26:05.0, while Hill ran the 8K course in 26:08.6. Sophomore Philip Wiles took 32nd after clocking in at 26:23.9. Senior Jay Penry and junior Stephan Pro were Wake's final finishers, placing in 54th and 56th places. Penry recorded a time of 27:20.0 and Pro, who had consistently run a 25-minute 8K course, finished the event in 27:28.2.

Both teams will compete in the NCAA Regional Tournament November 13 in Greenville, SC.
