Janelle Kraus Qualifies For NCAA Cross Country Championships

GREENVILLE, S.C. - Senior Janelle Kraus was Wake Forest's lone NCAA qualifier to come out of Saturday's NCAA Men's and Women's Cross Country Qualifying Meet. Kraus finished the 5K course in 17:18 and, with her fourth place finish, qualified for the NCAA Championships to be held in Bloomington, IN November 22.
Wake Forest's women's team placed 5th in the 29-team field with 162 points. Kraus was the Demon Deacons' top finisher, while junior Kelly Brady clocked in at 17:58 to finish 20th. Senior Jill Snyder finished the race in 31st place with a time of 18:17. Sara Day, a junior, finished in 18:23, good for 35th place. Senior Alison Anibaldi took 81st with a time of 19:10, while Kathleen Kuhnert, in her second race this season, finished with a time of 19:20 and in 94th place. Valerie Waldron placed 110th for the Deacs and was the team's final runner. She clocked in at 19:36.
North Carolina's Trish Nervo won the event with a time of 17:03. The Tar Heels and NC State both qualified for the NCAA Championships, finishing in first and second place with scores of 66 and 79, respectively.
In the men's event, Wake Forest finished 5th as a team with 180 points. Sophomore Michael Altieri was the Deacs' top finisher. He placed 30th with a time of 31:14. Freshman Ed Acosta and sophomore Chris Estwanik took 33rd and 34th places. Acosta ran the race in 31:20, while Estwanik finished in 31:25. Junior Stephan Pro placed 41st with a time of 31:33. Sophomore Garick Hill finished in 31:41 to place 46th. Sophomores Sean Nagorny and Philip Wiles placed 74th and 75th. Nagorny ran the course in 32:22, while Wiles was a second slower at 32:23.
NC State and William & Mary both qualified for the NCAA Championships with scores of 40 and 69, respectively. Matthew Lane of William & Mary earned medalist honors, finishing the 8K course in 29:37.
