WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Head coach Annie Bennett named two early signees today for the Wake Forest women's cross country and track teams. Kara Mullin, a cross country runner from Lake Bluff, IL, and Jamie Grayzer, a heptathlete out of Bethel Park, PA, have both made early commitments to Wake Forest for the fall of 2000.
Bennett is excited about the addition of Mullin and Grayzer and acknowledges their strong backgrounds as part of her enthusiasm. "We're very excited to have both of them. We feel Kara will make a big impact when she gets here, and I really hope that Jamie can also make her mark individually in the hurdles as well."
In addition to cross country, Mullin will also compete in the 1,500 and 3,000 meter races at Wake. Bennett says she's had a nice senior year and keeps improving each time out. Mullin placed 4th in the Illinois State Meet, a meet which Bennett feels is always competitive. In the 800 meters at the event, Mullin finished 5th.
Grayzer, a heptathlete, earned a great deal of experience this summer at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, CA. "That event was her first opportunity to really compete at a high level," says Bennett. "She's ready to improve and get a lot better." In addition to that competition, Grayzer competed in the 1999 Indoor National Championships in Boston, the Pennsylvania Outdoor State Meet and the AAU National Meet at DisneyWorld. She took first place at the AAU event, and her 4400 mark in the heptathlon would already be a top-eight finish in the ACC, according to Bennett.
