O'Kelley Paces Deacons In Annual Black & Gold Scrimmage

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Junior guard Robert O'Kelley scored 23 points to lead the gold team to a 60-47 victory over the black squad on Tuesday evening in the annual Wake Forest men's basketball "Black & Gold" intrasquad scrimmage. The game was played before an estimated crowd of 2,000, with all proceeds from admission donated to the Brian Piccolo Cancer Fund and the Coaches vs. Cancer campaign.
O'Kelley went 8-11 from the floor in the game, including hitting all six two-point field goal attempts in the 24 minute scrimmage. Backcourt teammate Craig Dawson added 11 points on perfect 4-4 shooting, including a 3-3 mark from three-point range.
Sophomore forward Niki Arinze, playing for the first time after missing nearly all of the 1998-99 season with a shoulder injury, added 12 points, four assists and two steals. Other double figure scorers in the game included junior center Josh Shoemaker (10 points/six rebounds), freshman forward Josh Howard (10 points) and sophomore forward Antwan Scott (12 points).
As a team, the Demon Deacons shot a combined 59% from the floor (43-73) and hit 42% of their three-point attempts (7-17).
The men's basketball team will face its first outside competition on Saturday, Nov. 6 in an exhibition against the Five Star Hawks. The regular season tips off on Saturday, Nov. 20 when the Deacons host Campbell at 8 p.m. in Joel Coliseum.
