CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Senior third baseman Brian Sherlock (Medford, N.J.) went 3-for-5 with a double, three runs batted in and two stolen bases, but it was not enough as the University of Virginia baseball team was defeated by Wake Forest 13-7. With his first hit of the game, an RBI single to right field in the third inning, Sherlock became only the seventh player in school history with 200 career hits. The Cavaliers fall to 26-21-1 overall and 5-15 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, while the Demon Deacons improve to 34-17 overall and 13-10 in the ACC.
Wake Forest was led by Danny Borrell, who went 2-for-4 with five runs batted in, while Andrew Riepe went 2-for-5 with a homer and three RBI. Both Scott Daeley and Jon Palmieri added three hits for the Demon Deacons, as they became the first visiting team to sweep a three-game series in Charlottesville since North Carolina in 1994.
In addition to Sherlock, the Cavaliers were led by senior outfielders Jon Kemmerer (Reston, Va.) and E.J. Anderson (Mechanicsville, Va.), as Kemmerer was 2-for-5 with two RBI and Anderson went 2-for-2 with an RBI and a walk. Sophomore catcher Josh Bowling (Springfield, Va.) also had an RBI single for Virginia.
Wake Forest jumped on top of the Cavaliers early with three runs in the top of the first inning. Riepe hit a two-run homer, his 11th on the season, while Borrell had an RBI single. The Demon Deacons then added four more runs in the third to make the score 7-0. Borrell had a two-run double in the inning, while Scott Siemon added an RBI double. Virginia put its first two runs on the board in the bottom of the third, but the Cavaliers were never able to cut the Wake Forest lead to less than four runs.
Sophomore righthander Jeremy Ward picked up the victory in relief for the Demon Deacons, allowing three runs on four hits in 4-2/3 innings while striking out four. Wake Forest starter Eric Schmitt surrendered three earned runs on five hits in 4-1/3 innings.
Junior lefthander Javier Lopez (Fairfax, Va.) took the loss for the Cavaliers, giving up six earned runs on seven hits in three-plus innings. Freshman righthander Tommy Keiper (Chesapeake, Va.) pitched well in relief for Virginia, allowing only three hits in 3-2/3 scoreless innings.
The Cavaliers return to action tomorrow, Apr. 27, when they play host to Norfolk State at 3:00 p.m.
