WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Four Wake Forest tennis players have been named to the 1999 All-Atlantic Coast Conference tennis team, as selected by a vote of the league's head coaches. Senior Myles Clouston (Durban, South Africa) was represented from the men's squad while sophomore Mariel Verban (Bloomington, IL), and freshmen Janet Bergman (Pinehurts, NC) and Maren Haus (Brielle, NJ) were selected from the women's team.
Bergman was also selected as the league's Rookie of the Year, becoming the second straight Wake Forest player to earn that honor after Verban was tabbed as the league's top rookie in 1998. Bergman tallied a 7-1 ACC mark at No. 2 singles to earn the league's flight championship at that position. Bergman, who posted a 29-10 overall singles record, is currently ranked #35 in the ITA Collegiate Rankings.
Verban earned all-ACC honors for the second consecutive year after posting a team-high 38 singles victories this year. She went 7-1 in league play and was the ACC runner-up at the No. 1 singles position. Verban is currently ranked 11th in the nation in singles play. Haus, who was the ACC runner-up at No. 3 singles with a 5-3 league record, posted a 21-18 overall singles record this spring.
Clouston earned all-ACC honors for the second consecutive season after winning the ACC flight championship at No. 1 doubles with partner Raul Munoz. He is currently ranked 8th in the nation in doubles play and 70th in singles play in the ITA Collegiate Rankings. Clouston owns an overall record of 22-14 in singles and 27-7 in doubles, and he is just one win away from tying his own school record for doubles wins in a season.
