DAUFUSKIE ISLAND, S.C. -- The Wake Forest men's golf team carded a final round score of 293 to finish 14th overall at the NCAA East Regional, missing the cut for the NCAA Championships and ending the 1997-98 season. Only the top 11 teams and two individuals advance to the NCAA Championships, held in Albuquerque, N.M., on May 27-30. It marks the first time since 1990 that the Demon Deacons have not made the regional cut. The Deacs entered the final day just one stroke out of the top 11, needing a strong round to move ahead in a tough regional field. Wake came in at 5-over-par on the day, however, finishing 10 strokes behind the cut at 15-over.
Georgia Tech shot a 12-under 276 in the final round to seal up the regional team title, finishing the event at 29-under par. Three other ACC squads made the final cut: Clemson, who placed second at 20-under, and NC State and North Carolina, who tied for sixth place at 2-under. Florida State (12th place), Virginia (13th), and Wake Forest (14th) all finished right below the cut.
Georgia Tech sophomore and U.S. Amateur champion Matt Kuchar sewed up the individual title after carding a 69 in the final round, finishing the three-day tournament at 14-under-par. Kuchar was the only player in the field to fire three consecutive sub-70 rounds. Wake Forest junior Michael Capone looked to be in strong contention for an individual berth to the NCAA Championships, coming into the day at 11th place after firing a 69 in the second round. Capone shot a team-high 76, however, finishing tied for 29th place at 1-over-par and missing the individual cut by three strokes. Senior Ryan Gioffre shot a 71 in the final round and finished tied for 35th at 2-over. Seniors Todd Lynch and Ray Floyd, Jr. both finished in a tie for 70th place at 8-over, carding a 74 and a 73, respectively. Junior Juan Vizcaya recorded a 75 and placed 77th at 9-over.
